Automated Robot Fish to Monitor the Oceans

robotic-fishBritish researchers have created some robotic fish that were designed to jump in to the see around Spain and monitor pollution levels in the waters. The robotic fish measure 1.5 meters in length and are fully automated.

The robot fish mimic how real fish move and will navigate around the oceans. Sensors are attached to the fish that can detect oil spills, mercury and other dangerous materials that could polute the waters. To pass the information back the fish is equipped with a wi-fi connection that keeps in in contact at all times. 5 of these fish will be deployed in Spain’s waters next year over at the port of Gijon. If they succesfully work and don’t break down etc… then they could start being used in various sea locations around the world.

The fish cost £20K each and aim to tackle the problem of stuff being intentionally dumped in to the sea.

Periodic Table of Controllers

periodic-table-of-controllersThis periodic table doesn’t list your normal chemistry type information. Instead, it was designed to list a bunch of old control pads, paddles and other console input devices.

The Periodic Table of Controllers was designed by a Flickr user who goes by the name of Pixel Fantasy. It details all the specs of each controller like how many buttons it has and what console it is compatible with along to what year the console was released. It makes an interesting read as I am sure you probably wont remember every one of these consoles. [Read more…]

Tupperware PS2 Arcade Stick

tupperware-ps2-arcade-stickThis PS2 arcade stick reminds me of the StreetFighter II stick we mentioned last week. The only differences are 1.)It’s built for the PS2 and 2.)It’s made from Tupperware.

For those of you not familiar with Tupperware, they created a bunch of plastic dishes, bowls and tubs to store food in. The tubs tend to come in all sizes, so finding one to house a PS2 arcade stick seemed like the right thing to do. [Read more…]

Samsung N310 NetBook Priced and Spec’d

samsung_n310The Samsung N310 is a netbook that has a 10.1″ screen, 1GB of RAM, 160GB HDD and an Intel Atom N270 processor that runs at 1.6GHz. It will be made available soon in the UK.

This ultra portable netbook will set you back £399 though which seems a tad higher then similar competition. It does look good in an odd way, but I am not sure I could spend £399 on this netbook. On the connectivity side the netbook has WiFi, Bluetooth and optional HSDPA/WiBro connectivity. A 5 hour battery life is possible on the standard batter with that being boosted all the way up to 11 hours by using the extended battery pack. [Read more…]

XBox 360 Style Games on a Cell Phone

phoneboxA company are claiming that it will soon be possible to put the XBox level games on to a mobile phone. This is due to a new chip that they are launching that will greatly increase the power available to run these types of games.

The new processors by ARM will have enough power to handle all the 3D elements and smooth gameplay although playing them on a small screen might not be the most desirable thing. The good news is that mobile pico sized projectors are starting to be made available which we will soon see them embedded in phones. A mixture of a mini projector and a powerful ARM processor should give you a nice 50 – 60″ screen capable XBox console that you can carry around in your pocket. [Read more…]

Super Nintoaster – Hacked Toaster

super-nintoasterThe Super Nintoaster is an old 16-bit Super Nintendo squashed inside a hacked toaster. It’s a brilliant idea and actually works quite well as can be seen on the video after the jump.

The Nintoaster has no power pack as it’s built in to the toaster. You simply plug the toaster in and the toast slot on the left is used for the game cartridge while the toast slot on the right houses the ports to connect up to 2 controllers. Also the reset button can be found in that section. On the side of the toaster there are AV outputs with yellow for video, red and white for stereo audio. To switch the Super Nintoaster on you push the button down like you would to make toast and on come some bright red LED’s that can be adjusted in brightness with a control on the side of the toaster.
