Apple and Samsung Deal Signed – $240M

Apple [AAPL] have signed a contract with Samsung believed to be worth $240 Million. The contract will see Samsung provide 3 million iPad displays to Apple. The deal is also believed to add more stability to iPad production in case of problems with the primary supplied.

The new deal will see Samsung become the second major supplied of 9.7 inch sized screens for the Apple iPad. The 3 million screens will be used over an unspecified amount of time. This is all according to a high-ranking industry representative who spoke to the Korea Times.

The Apple iPad screen is the most expensive part of the device and costs $80 regardless of which model it is put in. It’s twice the size of the iPhone screen but costs five times more due to the complexities required in building a larger capacitive touch screen as well as it having four times the amount of surface. Samsung Wave gets DivX HD Certification

Samsung have announced that their new Samsung Wave smartphone is the first in the world to get DivX HD certification meaning it supports playback on screen of 720p HD video. That’s a lot of pixels squashed in to the 3.3 inch Super AMOLED screen.

It does make you ask the question though in regards to if a screen measuring 3.3 inches can really produce anything different than a non HD screen at a slightly lower resolution. Would you be able to spot the difference? With that aside, it’s still quite a claim for Samsung and mixed with the Super AMOLED screen should give an amazing viewing experience.

Features of the Samsung Wave include Bluetooth 3.0 and wireless 802.11n. The Wave is the first phone to run bada, the new OS from Samsung. I’m not convinced yet it will go anywhere as an OS, but I’ll wait till I test the unit before making that a real judgement. [Read more…]

The application is free to download and can be grabbed from the usual sources (the App Store on the phone or iTunes) and once installed allows you to see all the latest Digg content on your iPhone or iPod Touch device. To get started on the application after it is installed you just need to log in with your regular Digg account and once done, you have access to the features that you would be able to use on the full website version along with details of what pages you have digged and those friends you have. Samsung ST5000 and ST5500 Announced

Samsung have announced a couple of new digital cameras called the Samsung ST5500 and the ST5000.

The cameras have been redesigned to be more comfortable to use with the shutter button being set at an angle to make it easier to press.

The cameras have a 3.7 inch WVGA AMOLED touchscreen (3.5″ for the ST5000) on the back to display the images just captured as well as allow you to work through the various menu systems.

A further premium design enhancement is the ˜da Vinci-inspired design’ of the lens technology, based on Leonardo da Vinci’s famed habit of writing notes backwards to be read later using a mirror. This method ensures that when the camera is turned on, the lens barrel extends automatically and the image’s specifications (focal length and aperture) appear in the concave reflective lens rings instantaneously.
