The HDMS-S1D comes from Sony and is a feature packed Digital Photo Album. The device can be attached to a HDTV via a HDMI cable and has an 80Gb hard drive allowing a ton of photos to be stored and kept in 1 location. Transferring files to the device is easy as it sports a number of memory card formats as well as a CD reader, DVD and USB or network connections. Once the photos are on there (50000+) high res, you can file them away by using the remote control on a simple interface. It costs $400 so would be affordable to those who want to take and store a lot of photos. Although nothing is mentioned about backups we can assume the Ethernet cable can be used to transfer files to the PC so you have photos in 2 locations.

LEW – Light Emitting Wallpaper

Light Emitting Wallpaper is a cool concept idea created by Jonas Samson. The wallpaper is embedded with lights and can light up to give “mood lighting” in your home. When not needed, the lights can be switched off leaving just the regular wallpaper on the wall. What would make it more interesting is if the pattern could be customised by controlling individual pixels/LED’s? Heck, you could even connect it to your PC via Wifi and download patterns to it.

Barclays PINsentry

Several months ago, Barclays announced a new security system for online banking in the UK. The device is named PINsentry and is used to log in to their online banking sytem by providing it your PIN code. The PINsentry is a small calculator sized device which has a slot for your credit card on the top, a screen and a keypad to enter your PIN number. After successful authentication you then use the number provided on the screen to log in to your online bank account. Not every Barclays online customer will get a PINsentry device right away. Only those who set up payments to new third party accounts will begin to use the PINsentry device. Around half a million customers either will, or have just received their PINsentry device.

I received mine a couple of weeks back and it does what it says it does. I can log in first time, every time with an 8 digit number generated from my card and PIN code. On a security side it is more secure because it requires that the person logging in has the physical card to log in with and also knows the PIN code as well as having a Barclays PINsentry device. The only downside I have found is that it needs to travel with me so that I can access my accounts anywhere I want and I tend to still forget this and find I cannot log on when needed.

Blusens G.41 PMP

The G.41 is made by Blusens and is a cool looking PMP which measures 160 x 65 x 13 mm. The screen is 4.3 inch and touch screen allowing for fairly comfortable viewing of MPEG4 movies. Wi-Fi is another feature of this device allowing fast connections to the internet should you be in a hotspot. An FM radio is built in as well as camera, voice recorder and the device features a loud speaker to listen to the music or audio from a movie.

Wii Intercooler

I have not come across a burnt out Wii yet, or seen any heating issues mentioned anywhere, but that doesn’t stop Nyko introducing the Wii Intercooler. The device attaches to the back of the wii and plugs in to the power input which then allows the power cord to be plugged in to that. The fan then positions over the vent allowing the Wii to cool down (although it runs fairly cool anyway).

Cect W100 Wrist Watch Phone

The Cect W100 is a wrist watch with built in GSM on the 900/1800MHz range. This allows it to be used as a phone. It is built by Qiao Xing Mobile Communications Co Ltd and is fully packed with features. As well as being able to make phone calls the watch can play MP3 music or show 3GP and MP4 movies. As well as the audio and video capabilities there is a camera built in which has a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels.

Talk time is around 3 – 4 hours with about 200 – 280 hours of standby time. SMS and MMS messages can be sent/received and calls can either make the watch ring or vibrate. Ring tones are fully customisable too with the ability to play MP3 or MP4’s. The screen it touch screen which allows you to either write on the face of the watch or tap the screen for dialing. Memory wise, the watch phone supports up to 2GB on a MicroSD card. That’s a crazy amount of features just there with others such as Bluetooth, Alarms, calculator, graphics editor, memos, calendar, stopwatch and a few more.

1 Tb Laptop Hard Drive

Hitachi have successfully scaled-down a key component in the hard drive down to nano-scale and this accomplishment allows for a 1 TB Laptop Hard Drive to be created. This breakthrough will allow hard drive capacities to quadruple in the next 4 years. For a desktop you can expect a hard drive to have a 4 Terabyte capacity with laptops and iPod’s having 1 Terabyte of storage. To give you an idea of what a Terabyte of information can store it would be equal to 1 million books, 250 hours of HD video or 250000 tunes. Quadruple that for the desktop sized hard drives and there you have an even more insane amount of storage space.

I can understand the need of such storage amounts in a business situation, but for personal use… I have barely broken the 20Gb mark and I bet half of that is just junk anyway. It is still an impressive accomplishment and although not needed right now, a 1 TB Laptop Hard Drive could well be needed in 4 years time when higher res photos will be stored, HD DVD’s will be stored and a lot more.

To accomplish this….

Hitachi said it has created the world’s smallest disk drive heads in the 30-nanometre to 50-nanometre range, or about 2,000 times smaller than the width of an average human hair.
