We are now hearing a few more details about this 12 inch netbook/notepad that show it will have automatic graphics switching along with a full HD output of 1080p.

By using automatic switching it allows the netbook to increase graphics capabilities on the fly and as and when needed and then pull back to conserve power when the requirements on-screen are less. [Read more…]

Apple iPad 3G Gets Hacked up Vodafone SIM to work in UK

John Benson ordered an Apple iPad 3G in the UK that arrived from the US this week. When opening it up, it obviously had an AT&T microSIM that won’t work over here. The problem is that in the UK at the moment, microSIM’s are not available just yet so rather than waiting a month to use it, John took a knife to his Vodafone SIM and chopped off the plastic edges to make it in to a microSIM.

The U.K. resident was faced with a disparity in SIM cards once he received his iPad from over the pond, writing on his website, “This morning, my shiny new iPad 3G 64Gb arrived from the USA! The only problem was, it had an AT&T MicroSIM and as yet there is no such thing in the UK.”

Google Chrome Speed Test – Browser battles a Potato

Google [GOOG] tend to be quite creative when it comes to launching new versions of products or even new products. Rather than using the traditional javascript speed tests and other various methods that we normally see to measure the speed of a browser, Google went ahead and set up a number of tests that put up a potato vs Chrome to see which of the two was the quickest.

The hardware used for the test included a MacBook Pro with Windows installed, a 24 inch ASUS monitor, a 15 MBps internet connection and a Phantom v640 high speed camera that can capture up to 2700 frames per second at a resolution of 1920 x 1080.

“Why does allrecipes.com in the potato gun sequence appear at once, and not the text first and images second? And why does it appear to render from bottom of the screen to the top?”

Chrome sends the rendered page to the video card buffer all at once, which is why allrecipes.com appears at once, and not with the text first and images second. Chrome actually paints the page from top to bottom, but to eliminate a shadow from the driver board, we had to flip the monitor upside down and set the system preferences in Windows to rotate everything 180 degrees, resulting in the page appearing to render from bottom to top.

From what we hear these particular netbooks are heading to Taiwan and will have prices ranging from $478 to $605 USD. The higher than average prices are due to what is found inside each of these netbooks.

The latter two netbooks (ASUS 1215 and ASUS 1218) are both 12 inch screened devices which pushes them in to notebook territory. Each has next-gen NVIDIA ION graphics. The smaller 10 inch screen model (the ASUS 1015) is also believed to run NVIDIA ION graphics although from what we hear, it will run a less capable version of the ION platform. [Read more…]

Jailbroke Apple iPad 3G Sends SMS Message

MuscleNerd has been working away on his new Apple iPad 3G this weekend it seems. As well as him and the dev team launching the Apple iPhone OS 3.1.X and 3.2 untethered jailbreak, they also managed to get the Apple iPad 3G to send an SMS message.

There is no GUI for this though and right now it is only working via command line, but either way it’s still a great accomplishment indicating that next in line is phone calls.

The SMS couldn’t be sent over the AT&T network though as there seems to be some block on the AT&T micro SIM sending messages. Instead, a T-Mobile SIM card was chopped up and made in to a micro SIM and this SIM was used to send the messages. [Read more…]
