Sony Ericsson PSP Phone

Sony Ericsson PSP Phone
A Patent by Sony Ericsson was filed which credits the rumours of a PSP phone which have been floating around recently. As can be seen in the above patent, the screen can rotate around to be used portrait or landscape. Indications of being able to pause a game to take a call are also mentioned. The screen does look quite large and the phone looks to be a fairly acceptable size although it is hard to tell for sure on the line drawings. Apart from what you see above, there isnt much information. Details of key positions is not clearly showed.

PSP Streaming From Windows Media

PSP-Streaming-Media-From-Windows
According to Hardcoreware they found that the latest PS3 firmware which is currently 1.8 allows you to stream Windows Media to your PSP wirelessly. This is achieved by using the Remote Play feature which allows you to view all the streaming functions on the 1.8 update. Unfortunately I have not had chance to test this my self due to not having a PS3, but for those who cannot wait another month for the PSP firmware update you will have to use the work around mentioned.

Sony PSP Price cut in the US

Sony PSP White
The US are getting a good deal this time around with the price cut of the Sony PSP. The core PSP pack will be dropping in price from $199.99 down to $169.99 which is around 85 pounds for us in the UK. The core pack includes the PSP, battery and power adapter. In the UK it still costs 150 pounds which is a bit crazy if you ask me with it being almost 2 years old in the UK.

A Sony rep was asked if the price cuts would come to the UK and Europe but they responded that they have no announcements at the moment.

Free Wi-fi Access for PSP Owners

Sony PSP
If you are an owner of a Sony PSP and frequent T-Mobile hotspots then you could be entitled to 6 months of free wifi access. Hurry though… there are only 362 days left to qualify for 6 free months. I have heard rumours that you also need to have the latest firmware, but as I am in the UK and this offer is for the US its a tad far for me to travel and test.

To get this working you need to follow these instructions…

Create a T-Mobile HotSpot Network Profile

1. Bring your PSP® system to a location that provides a T-Mobile HotSpot. (Refer to the T-Mobile HotSpot U.S. Location Map.)
2. Select (Network Settings) under (Settings).
3. Select [Infrastructure Mode].
4. Select [New Connection].
5. Select [Use Wireless Hotspot].
6. Select the T-Mobile HotSpot icon.
7. If you have an existing T-Mobile HotSpot account, select [Enter User Credentials]. Enter your user ID and password, and then press the right button. or If you do not have an account, select [Use Promotional Access] to sign up for a complimentary six-month T-Mobile HotSpot account . (To qualify for this promotional access, you must authenticate your PSP® system to the T-Mobile HotSpot network prior to March 28, 2008.)
8. Check the contents of the settings list.
9. Save the settings.
10. Perform a connection test. If you select [Test Connection], the system will connect to the selected access point.
11. Confirm the connection test results.
If the connection is successful, information about the network is displayed.

Sony PSP Steering Wheel Mod

PSP Steering Wheel
The Sony PSP Steering Wheel mod is one of those mods you just have to take a look at, but at the same time you wonder why it was thought of. It’s not the most practical of mods to have been created and it isnt a portable mod (from what I can tell in the video below). However, it kind of is cool to think you can burn around the track on Ridge Racer or smash people up on Burnout.

Sony PSP V2

Sony PSP
The Sony PSP was launched over 2 years ago and rumours are now circulating that a redesign could be due. The PS1 and PS2 have both been through dramatic redesigns slicing all the excess off the larger versions and making them a whole lot smaller. I do not think there is too much more that could be cut down on the Sony PSP as it boasts a seriously nice sized screen which would be a shame to make smaller, however, it could be made a tad thinner. I am sure the design team at Sony will do something good with the PSP. Some PSP users are requesting a second analogue stick.

Features I would like to see in the new version is a thinner form, same sized screen, memory based rather then UMB based, dual analog controllers, analogue buttons like the PS2 and PS3 control pad and maybe a rumble option 🙂 Of course features such as wifi should stay, with the possibility of Bluetooth and GPS. We can dream though, although it’s all technically feasable with the advancements in technology.

Sony PSP Keyboard – Homebrew Style

Sony PSP Keyboard
Since the launch of the Sony PSP (Playstation Portable) the homebrew world have been doing all sorts to hack in to this amazing device and they are doing a good job too… so much so that Sony keeps having to release the latest and greatest firmware to close up security holes only to find out that shortly after, there is another security hole to exploit. Madruscoe has managed to create a homebrew app which allows you to create .txt files on your memory stick by using the Palm(One) Universal Wireless Keyboard. The keyboard costs 50 – 60 dollars on Amazon and currently is the only compatible keyboard that this homebrew application.

The application allows each note (.txt file) to be 4Kb and the amount of files you can store is just limited by how many of them you can cram on to your memory stick. The video below goes in to more details about this and is well worth watching.

Sony PSP Firmware Update

Sony PSP
Sony have launched a new firmware for the PSP. This will update your PSP up to version 3.0 now which has a number of enhancements and no doubt, a number of security fixes to stop you homebrew folks from making it do stuff it wasnt designed for 😉 The PSP once updated will have the long awaited PlayStation Network connectivity as well as PlayStation 3 connectivity.

Complete PSP 3.0 Update List:
* PlayStation Network support added under Game
* Online manuals added under Network
* Camera added under Photo
* UMD Auto-Start added under Settings
* 3-Speed Fast Forward/Reverse added under Music
* Visual Player added under Music
* Remote Play added under Network

To upgrade, just go to the network update menu and follow the instructions.

Sony PSP Clone Phone

Sony PSP Phone Clone
The PSP has been cloned. The new V191 mobile handset is a Sony PSP look a like. Well, it almost is a PSP look a like. To the untrained eye it might get confused. The phone will play games and the phone can be held like a PSP. However, the games play a Nintendo emulator. The phone has a micro SD slot, 1.3 megapixel camera and can play music and video.

The price tag is rather healthy at 650 USD in Hong Kong. I think I will give this one a miss.

PSP – PS3 Remote – RSS

It has been confirmed in San Diego that the Sony PSP will be capable of working as a remote for the Sony Playstation 3 which is due out later this hear. It has been a rumour for a number of months but is now official.

The next version of firmware for the PSP is version 2.8 which will include support for RSS video feeds and will also include a demo of World Tour Soccer 2.

It’s good news that the PSP is still getting the needed support from Sony with the launch of the new Sony PS3.

Other news for the PSP is that it will feature a better keyboard soon as this is one of the downsides of using the device for anything else but games.

Sony PSP Downgrade from 2.6 – 1.5

I never thought I would see this happen for a while. Someone has created a firmware downgrade from versions 2.5/2.6 to version 1.5. It is still in beta and parts are illegal (like the eboot file) so we do not endorse this at all. It is rather good news for the homebrew scene though.
