Apple iPad 3G Gets Hacked up Vodafone SIM to work in UK

John Benson ordered an Apple iPad 3G in the UK that arrived from the US this week. When opening it up, it obviously had an AT&T microSIM that won’t work over here. The problem is that in the UK at the moment, microSIM’s are not available just yet so rather than waiting a month to use it, John took a knife to his Vodafone SIM and chopped off the plastic edges to make it in to a microSIM.

The U.K. resident was faced with a disparity in SIM cards once he received his iPad from over the pond, writing on his website, “This morning, my shiny new iPad 3G 64Gb arrived from the USA! The only problem was, it had an AT&T MicroSIM and as yet there is no such thing in the UK.”

Apple iPhone OS 4.0 Beta 3 Demod on Video

Beta 3 of the latest iPhone OS 4.0 was released a couple of days ago which revealed a few new features not found previously. New features include a new iPod dock section that brings up basic controls in to the dock area. Also an orientation lock was found allowing you to prevent the iPhone screen from rotating when the phone changes orientation. The iPad has this function built in but uses a physical switch instead of a virtual button on-screen like the iPhone and iPod Touch devices.

A demonstration has been made that shows the new iPhone OS 4.0 in action along with the new features that Beta 3 brings to the phone. The OS was demonstrated on the iPhone 3GS due to the 3G and some iPod Touch models not allowing multitouch to function (unless jailbroke of course). [Read more…]

Solar Cells Printed on Paper

Solar panels can be great in that they can provide power anywhere there is light from the sun. Right now though the panels are quite expensive to produce and require a bit of equipment to store energy captured for use at a later date.

A company are now looking at printing solar cells on to paper. By using carbon-based dyes the cells are created with an efficiency of about 1.5 to 2 percent…

The materials MIT researchers used are carbon-based dyes and the cells are about 1.5 percent to 2 percent efficient at converting sunlight to electricity. But any material could be used if it can be deposited at room temperature, Bulovic said. ‘Absolutely, the trick was coming up with ways to use paper, he said.
