Sophos has launched a free Anti-Malware tool for those running a Mac. The Mac is a more-or-less virus proof machine although there is always some element of risk from infections (including Malware).

Microsoft [MSFT] has launched Office 2011 for Mac. This new version updates the older 2008 version and brings a number of enhancements to make it better than before.

In a recent review of the software, Office for Mac 2011 was seen to have far better compatibility with the Windows version of Office. In past versions some of the functions of Spreadsheets didn’t copy over correctly. This new version seems to handle conversions a lot better, although still not perfectly. [Read more…]

Just a few days ago, Apple [AAPL] announced the new MacBook Air. Two new models were announced with the smaller one having an 11.6 inch screen. iFixit has done the usual and torn it apart to see whats exactly inside and let us know how easy it is to service the new laptop. Bad news is that its almost all propriety and therefore, difficult to put standard parts in to fix things or customise it.

Some highlights mentioned by iFixit include the scrapping of the IR sensor and sleep LED. These have been replaced by a USB 2.0 port on the right edge. Propriety 5-point security Torx screws are used to open it up although after that its all standard screws. [Read more…]

Apple [AAPL] announced yesterday that the Mac App Store was scheduled for 90 days time to be launched for Mac OS X Snow Leopard and above. Following shortly after that announcement, Firemint has now said that it will be launching Flight Control HD for the Mac App Store. Google [GOOG] has release the Google Chrome 7 browser. This newest and latest version contains a number of bug fixes as well as a few new features that improve the browsing experience for users.

New features included are aimed mostly at developers which include AppleScript support for Mac OS X users which allows for UI automation along with HTML5 parsing. [Read more…]

Today at the Back to the Mac event, Apple [AAPL] also announced Max OS X Lion. The Lion version will be the 8th major release in the series when it arrives in the summer of 2011.

New features in Mac OS X Lion include the Mac App Store that brings to App Store of the iPhone and iPad to the Mac. The store is different in regards to what apps will be available, but the principles behind it are the same in that users can can easily download apps that run in full screen from the store with just one click. The Mac App Store will be launching in 90 days time for Snow Leopard and in November, developers will be able to begin submitting apps for approval at launch. If you want to test out FaceTime for Mac then you’re in luck as the download is already available over here.

FaceTime for Mac allows users to make FaceTime calls between Mac and the iPhone 4 or latest gen iPod touch. The software is still in Beta but seems to work as needed.

When you have downloaded the software you can click on the FaceTime icon where you then have the option to log in with your Apple ID. Once done, you can then make FaceTime calls as needed. [Read more…]

Microsoft [MSFT] is about to launch a new version of Office for Mac. It is called Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 and is the first updated version in 3 years.

Early reviews indicate that 2011 is a huge improvement when compared to 2008. AllThingsD describe it as being new, faster and a better version. They also report that when opening documents created in Windows on the Mac that the conversion is far better, although not perfect but still better than the 2008 version with the document rendering closer to the Windows version than it ever has before. This particular model has a 21.5 inch display that supports full HD at 1080p (1920 x 1080 pixels).
