Google Wallet Announced – Also Compatible with Non-NFC Smartphones

Google Wallet was announced by Google yesterday which brings the ability to use your smartphone to make mobile payments. By using an NFC enabled smartphone (Nexus S), you can store your card details in the phone and then make payment using the MasterCard PayPass system. For those without an NFC enabled smartphone, we hear from TechCrunch that special stickers will be used to make payment although this iteration of the system is more limited than the fully fledged NFC way.

Google Wallet is an app that will be launched soon on Android smartphones. When launched, card details, loyalty cards and gift cards will be capable of being stored. This means that you can carry your wallet around with you, without the bulk of all the cards. Looking forwards to the future, Google also comment that boarding passes, ID cards and keys will also be able to be stored in Google Wallet.

iPhone 4 Noise Cancellation is Powered by Audience

iFixit has revealed that the iPhone 4 has noise cancellation technology that is powered by Audience. Audience is the same chip that is used in the Google Nexus One in that two microphones are used with one capturing the voice and the other capturing background noise. The chip then can cut out background noise to make better quality calls.

The iPhone 4 uses this same technology. When iFixit first took the iPhone 4 apart, they did find two microphones but it wasn’t clear what technology was being used for noise cancellation. After another look inside the iPhone 4 when the Verizon model launched, the same mysterious unknown chip was found inside. Rather than ignore it, Chipworks (friends of iFixit), decided to take a look inside the chip and they found the following:

iPhone 5 Digitizer Panel Hints at a Larger Edge to Edge Display

The part pictured below is believed to be the digitizer panel for the iPhone 5. If real, we see that it appears to be a similar design to the iPhone 4 although the bezel around the edges of the screen are actually smaller on all 4 edges. This lines up with rumours about the iPhone 5 screen being 4 inches rather than the regular 3.5 inches we have seen in all generations of the smartphone so far.

We don’t know for sure if the digitizer is real and to be honest, we don’t know how large the full part is, but we suspect it is a very similar size to the current iPhone 4 and that the extra half an inch will be gained by slimming down the bezel on the device. By doing this, Apple will be keeping competitive with the current Android devices that often have larger screens.

iOS Location Tracking File Could be Just an Oversight

Yesterday, an app was released that was able to read a file generated by iOS (and backed up to computer with iTunes), that shows where your iPhone or 3G enabled iPad has been since the day you purchased it. The file is called consolidated.db and uses cell tower information to give a guide as to where you have been.

Although there’s some obvious privacy questions here, the main questions are why this is allowed to happen, and what exactly does it track? A map of what the consolidated.db file looks like when placed on a map… program available here.
