4D Virtual Human

4D-Virtual-Human
Scientists at the University of Calgary recently created a computer model of a human body. The body resides in a virtual reality room known as a Research Holodeck where the the 4D model floats in space by being projected from three walls and the floor. When created, the model had 10 times resolution of any other in the market. For a more detailed explanation check out ScienceDaily who have a full report of the CAVEMan.

Gold Hard drive to Impress Business Colleagues

gold-hard-drive
My first impressions of the image above was that it was a gold shiney matress. I was wrong 🙂 You are actually looking at a 500GB external gold hard drive from LaCie. It uses USB 2.0 to connect which allows for fast file transfer. Other then that it is fairly standard but just jazzed up a little. I can imagine the looks you get as you whip out a gold hard drive from your laptop case in a business meeting. The gold hard drive will cost $189 and be available towards the end of this month.

Shredding Paper the Yanko Design Way

Green Shredder
A cool concept idea has landed from Yanko Design again. This time it is the Green Shredder. The green shredder is pretty much a normal paper shredder with a twist. Once it has diced and sliced up your paper it then recycles the paper and makes it in to useable paper such as post it notes and what not. Cool idea… will it happen? Not sure. Still a great idea though.

Porsche 911 Turbo S wheel

Porsche 911 Turbo S wheel
Forget the cheap looking steering wheels you get for your PS3 or PC. You need to look more up market and get your self a Porsche 911 Turbo S wheel. It has a a realistic clutch pedal with declining resistance and more realistic brakes which emulate a soft stop. Not bad for $350. Just grab your self a copy of Gran Turismo and your cruising in luxury. All we need now is the proper car seat to make it more authentic.

The TVs in this car a little Excessive

in car TV
With the thin LCD type screens now being more affordable it has opened up a ton of uses. Over the last few years we have seen cars with screens in various places. It makes you wonder how many is too much in a car? If I was to have screens in a car I would probably stick a couple in the headrests for the kids to watch and one in the dash if it was for sat nav. I think this one above takes it a little too far though 😉 Surely the new UK highway code has something against this. What happened to the days of playing “I spy with my little eye” or singing “Who stole the cookie from the cookie jar?” Oh well, I guess those days are over. I wonder when cars will come standard and packed full of screens.

Water walking Robot

Robot that walks on Water
A team over at Carnegie Mellon University are working on a robot that can walk on water. It will work in a similar way that a Basilisk does in that it can dash across water keeping afloat. A prototype is still being worked on although test simulations are showing positive. It makes you wonder if taking a trip from Dover to Calais in the future will be made in a robot which “dashes” across the water rather then on a boat or in the channel tunnel.

MagicJack – USB Convertor for Phones

MagicJack
By using a MagicJack USB converter you can use your regular phone to make VoIP calls through your PC. The MagicJack makes use of the YMax voice network which currently covers 75% of the US population with 90% coverage to be expected by the release date later this year. The device costs $39.95 and this includes a 1 year subscription to the YMax phone service which also provides a phone number, voice mail and 911 access. For simple VoIP access from a regular phone this could work out well although it would be nice to make calls out of the US. No doubt this will happen at a later date.

Super Skinny Sony TV is just 3mm thin

sony_xel_1_tv
The new XWL-1 TV from Sony is quite an amazing little screen. It has an Organic EL display technology which allows the screen to be just 3mm thin. Quite amazing if you ask me. The screen also measures 11 inches QHD (960×540) and has a good contrast ratio of 1000k:1 with vivid colours. The TV actually has support for HD and has a HDMI input port. Being only 3 mm thin the TV actually sits on a small stand where it appears all the cables and PSU are fitted. This TV will sell for $1734 when it is released in Japan in December. No details of release dates elsewhere are around yet though.
