Some Apple iPhone Apps removed from iPad by Steve Jobs – Rumour

It seems like the iPad is going to be shipped with a few missing apps that were originally on the iPhone.

The information comes from John Gruber of DaringFireball who is usually bang on with the information he posts on his site. From what we know and believe, the Apple iPad will ship with 12 built-in apps that include the likes of a Calendar, web browser etc… Those missing include Stocks, Calculator, Clock, Weather and Voice Memos… so where are they?

The basic answer (or rumour) is that Steve Jobs decided to scrap them as they didn’t function like he wanted them to on a larger screen. You may notice that calendar had a full revamp for the iPad making use of the larger screen allowing for appointments to actually be seen in monthly view. It doesn’t seem to be the same for the apps that are missing in that they don’t essentially “look the part”. [Read more…]

Tron Legacy is set to be launched on December 17 this year. [Read more…]

Sony 3D HDTVs Announced

Sony have announced 12 new full HD TV’s in their Bravia range, some of which are 3D TVs. The Sony Bravia LX900, HX900 and HX800 series are each backlit by LED and have full 3d HDTV capabilities with those attending the press event describing them as being “beautiful”.

Interesting features of the LX900 series include a new Intelligent People Sensors mode that uses a built in camera on the TV to detect were viewers are sitting in the room and the system adjusts the sound to match their location. As well as dealing with sound the Intelligent People Sensors also adjusts brightness in that it can detect when the viewer just has the TV on in the background rather than directly watching it… in these cases the picture will dim to save power. When it detects that no viewers are in the room the TV will automatically switch off to again, save a bit more power. Lets just hope that Sony have got this right!!! [Read more…]

Apple iPad Delay because of Software Issues?

Now that the official shipping date is set for the Apple iPad in the US with rough dates set for end of April in the UK amongst other countries, we are now hearing of reasons why Apple [AAPL] delayed the launch.

John Gruber of Daring Fireball claims to have heard the software is the problem with the device rather than a hardware issue (or lack of certain parts). Apple, as do all companies, need to get the software just right to make a successful launch. If software is the reason (and we’ll probably never know for sure) then the extra time will hopefully allow them to get the final version on the iPad. Worst case scenario (other than a bunch of bricked devices) is that a large scale patch launch will need to happen to correct the software issues afterwards. [Read more…]

Bluetooth 4.0 Arriving Q410

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group has said that the new version, Bluetooth 4.0, could be launching in the 4th quarter of this year with devices such as headsets, phones and PC’s all getting the technology.

The latest specification allows devices with smaller batteries to utilise Bluetooth. Previous versions of BT required that a device had at lease a AAA or larger capacity battery to function. The new 4.0 specifications allow for smaller devices that require coin-cell batteries to run.

As well as utilising less power, the device also has higher speed data transfer. Version 3.0 was launched last year although it kind of fell flat on it’s face due to the power requirements needed. Version 4.0 fixes those problems. [Read more…]

9mm Solar Sensor – Self Powered Computer

This little device is a self powered computer. It is described as being the “Smallest commercial-class, solar-powered sensor”. It features an ARM processor, it has a solar panel built in and measures just 2.5 x 3.5mm making it 1,000 times smaller than similar products.

The company behind it have managed to get the device to be so efficient that it uses about 2,000 less power when in sleep mode than other similar types of devices. If exposed to light a few times a day the device can continue running without being shut down. The only restriction on how it performs is when the battery dies after a few years of usage.

When powered on the device spends most of it’s life in sleep mode and powers on when needed for just a few minutes to take measurements. The average power consumption is just 1 nanowatt (ie, not a lot of energy). [Read more…]
