One Touch Can Opener

one touch can opener
This is not the usual type of gadget I write about, but what the heck. It will come in handy for everyone if they are feeling lazy. The one touch can opener opens up a can of bake beans or anything else by sitting it on top and hitting the black button. Amazon mention it does all the hard work (not that opening a can of beans really is hard work). The device also has a magnet so the lid comes off rather then dropping in to the can and it will open almost any round can. It is powered by 2 AA batteries and currently costs £12.99 in the UK and $14.99 in the US.

Slan LED Watches

slanledwatches
Slan LED watches are simple but look great. They do the basic functions a watch should do ie. Tell the time and date. The displays are large and made from coloured LED’s which shine fairly bright. The back of the watches are stainless steel and the strap is leather. The watches can go around 165 feet under water and cost around $100 depending on the model you get.

Ghost Detector Cell Phone Strap

ghost-detector
You might be a bit worried about ghosts with Halloween being just around the corner. If you are the type who lays awake in fear about ghosts being around, then a cell phone ghost detector is needed. It comes from Japan (surprised?) and detects magnetic field alterations and body temperature fluctuations. When a ghost is detected it will flash and make ghost noises. You then know if being frightened to death is needed or not. It costs just $17 and is well worth it if you get frightened about stuff like this.

Windows Mobile 6.1 Around the Corner

window-mobile-6-1
Rumours have been floating around about Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.1. The pencilled in date is for May 2008. The main feature seems to be the layout and how the menu’s all work. The menu’s are believed to work similar to the Treo 500v which uses a carousel type menu where you can move left and right between menus and then up and down those menus to choose the action. According to MS this allows a thinking along the lines of “what do I want to do today?”. As well as a new layout (if rumours are true) then you will also see better WiFi, Exchange integration and Bluetooth.

I literally in the past couple of weeks picked up my first WM6 device and I do hope that this will come as a free upgrade. If not, I am still happy with my current version and no complaints there 😉

HP LaserJet Hacks

insert coin
Out of all the hacks I could possibly think up of on my own, the HP LaserJet screen hack wouldn’t be one of them. A guy over at Kovaya has successfully hacked the little dot matrix display on a laser jet printer to display any message you want such as Insert Coin. On the larger printers with a larger screen he also managed to write some code to send weather reports that automatically update every 10 minutes. The weird thing is that nobody really notices and although some read, they didn’t question why a printer was doing weather reports on it’s screen.

Echo Bot – Insult your Friends

echo bot
If you feel the need for a bit of a laugh and want to hand out insults to work colleagues with out them knowing it’s you then go and pick up an Echo Bot. The Echo Bot is a 1 eyed alien which can record a message of up to 10 seconds and then play it back when someone walks with in a meter of it. The motion sensor inside picks up who is in proximity. I cant see this one frightening people away from your home, but it will brighten up the office for times when things are just boring.

Nokia E61i Review

nokia-e61i
TechLives owner recently purchased a Nokia E61i after several days of hunting around for the perfect phone. In summery the phone does real well. It’s slim, has a plethora of connectivity including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The keypad is QWERTY which can handle easily around 25 WPM. The screen is 2.8 inch and it has a 2 mega pixel camera. It runs on the Symbian OS 9.1 S60 3rd Edition and includes office apps such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Overall techlivez is happy with the E61i and mentions it is a good step between a phone and Pocket PC.

Cool Case-less Case Mod – SkyPuter

sky_puter
We see a ton of different case mods here at Gadget Venue and we can see that many people spend hours carving away at their computer cases and making them in to the next Half Life or Digg style. The idea of this mod was to drop the case completely and just dangle the parts from cat5 cables and a couple of hangers. The idea is weird but cool and makes for some amazing cooling as the surrounding air can just absorb the heat.

Round LCD Screen

tmd circular
Toshiba have created an LCD screen that is not the usual rectangle shape. This one is round. It is designed for use in cars on instrument panels and it measures just 2.95″ in diameter which is about a perfect fit for your dash board. The screen is just 11mm thick and this includes the backlights and other electronics needed to work the screen. Viewable area of the screen is 2.44″ diameter.

What I look forwards to is this being hackable. It will allow more customisation of your dashboard allowing easier colours on the eye as well as other information to be displayed.
