Star Wars Hologram Effect for iChat and PhotoBooth

Starwars Hologram
iChat was supposed to have a Star Wars hologram effect in Leopard, however, this was missing as it didn’t make it to the final cut. A mod has been made to create this effect in iChat. To get it to work you need to copy the install file over on to your computer by following the instructions below. Good luck and let us know how it works for you if you are a Leopard user.

You simply copy the .qtz file into your {HardDriveName}/Library/Compositions/ directory. The new effect will appear in iChat and can be seen by anyone (they don’t have to install the effect). An early version of the effect is available in this thread.

Update: Ice-Cube posts how to get this effect into PhotoBooth:

1. Extract HoloGit.qtz from the zip file.
2. Place it on your desktop for easy access.
3. Go to photobooth in your applications folder and right click to *Show package contents*
4. Navigate to content>resources
5. Drag the HoloGit.qtz file from the desktop to this folder.
6. Locate the file *EffectsOrdering.plist* in this folder
7. Open the file with textedit
8. You should see a number of effects listed in that file. You should see user backdrop 1, user backdrop 2, and so forth in the last paragraph.
9. Replace the words *user backdrop 1* to *HoloGit*
It should look like this: /HoloGit
10. Save the file. Close all folders.
11. Open up photobooth and enjoy your newfound effect.

Microsoft XBox 360 Kinect Starwars Demo Video

We are not 100% convinced this is actual game play on the new Microsoft XBox 360 Kinect. The demo shown on video is for Starwars and it shows a demo of the game running with a guy supposedly controlling it through the new XBox 360 Kinect (previously known as Project Natal).

The reason we posted it was because it looks great… but at the same time it doesn’t actually look real in that it seems like the user is following the character instead of the character following the user. It seems like it’s more staged than anything, but either way, hopefully we’ll see some clearer demos soon showing actual in-game footage and controlled by someone. [Read more…]

Death Star Blue Prints Revealed

Ever wanted to build your own Death Star or perhaps a Light Sabre or Darth Vader mask? This book is for you. The Star Wars Blue Prints book provides all the details you need on how to build all of the above items. Of course you’ll need quite a large factory (about the size of a small moon) if you want to build a full operational Death Star as well as means to get it up in to space, but forgetting the small obstacles you’ll have all you need to get going.

It actually looks like quite an interesting book for times when there isn’t much going on and well worth paying the $14 or so dollars for someone’s Christmas present (although if you are still shopping now then you’ll have to pay for next day shipping to get it on time). [Read more…]

Crazy Death Star Cinema Room

Death Star Theatre
This cool looking star wars theatre was built to look like the death star control deck. The design includes C3PO and Bobafett. It took 36 months to build. Two entrances can be found which have back lit floors to either the left or right followed by automatic sliding doors. A secret door can be found behind Han Solo who is stuck in carbonite. In that room you will find an extensive video and audio collection. All the equipment is kept out of the main room next to the media room. In the cinema its self there are 3 rows of seats, a fiber optic star field, and 22 feet of space from the back wall to the screen.

Microsoft Kinect Hacked to Create Lightsaber Tracking

The Kinect has once again been made to work as something different to what Microsoft originally intended. This time, the Kinect is used to track a broom handle and with that tracking, displays a lightsaber blade on the screen along with the noises a Star Wars weapon would make.

The Kinect Hack comes from a guy named Yan this time. The software tracks the wooden stick and then real time software makes it glow on screen. [Read more…]
