Tremendous Demand for the AT&T iPhone 3GS

The iPhone 3GS launched in various countries around the world in June 2009. Although the smartphone is over 2 years old now, AT&T has reported that it is seeing a tremendous demand for the device and that it has actually sold out because of the demand.

The iPhone 3GS is now free on a 2 year contract in the US which is believed to be the reason why the demand has increased. When Apple [AAPL] announced the iPhone 4S the iPhone 4 became a budget device dropping to $99 on a two year contract. This price point was previously taken by the 3GS which after the launch dropped to being free on contract.

We’ve seen a tremendous, tremendous demand for that device even though it’s a generation old. And actually, we’re getting more new subscribers coming on the 3GS on the average than other devices. So we also have an inventory sold out on that device.

AT&T expect the current quarters numbers to soar in preparation for Christmas after a slight drop in the last quarter.

Back to the iPhone 3GS… the 3GS is capable of running iOS 5 that was released almost two weeks ago which also makes it an attractive option.
