T-Mobile G1 gets Android 2.2 Froyo Alpha Release

For those who are daring with their Android smartphones, you can now get a working Alpha launch of Android 2.2 for the T-Mobile G1 / Dream, Magic / Sapphire.

The build comes courtesy of Cyanogen, Chiefzreloaded, Zenulator (XDA), ts0cha0tik, punkkaos and Azuske who have worked on the G1 port since the ROM was available for download.

With the build being alpha, there’s obviously some things that do not work just yet. The list of things that do work includes calls, 3G, LEDs, call audio, gapps and the notification bar.

Things not working includes WiFi, camera, GPS, some wallpaper, external audio and you cannot install flash just yet.

From past experience of installing Android builds from Cyanogen and the teams at XDA, I have found that they are very quick at working through the bugs, so keep checking back for updates. Right now the download link indicates it is the 15th test. Rather than posting a direct link to the download, which might get out of date with in a few hours, the link here takes you to the forum where the team update the thread with the latest link to download it.

Of course, take the usual precautions when installing any custom ROM and follow instructions precisely to prevent turning your Android smartphone in to a brick.
