RIM Begins to Recover from BlackBerry Outage

It appears that RIM is finally managing to fix the problems for BlackBerry users that have seen outages over the last few days. At the moment, email appears to be fixed as does the BBM service. Browsing is still down though from reports that we have read.

Although email and BBM is coming back up to speed there is still a large backlog of messages that are being pushed out to devices. We don’t know how long it will take to offload the backlog of data, but it wouldn’t be a big surprise if it took the rest of today to get things back to where they should be.

The reasons for the problems were due to a switch that failed somewhere in Europe. We also understand that backup equipment had also failed which essentially just took the network down.

To help fix the problems RIM has been adding extra capacity to the US side so that those servers can help with the backlog of data.

Expect more updates to follow throughout today and tomorrow. The latest update from a few hours ago reads:

Wednesday 12th October – 23:30 (GMT-5)
In Europe, Middle East, India and Africa, we are seeing a significant increase in service levels. Service levels are also progressing well in the U.S., Canada and Latin America and we are seeing increased traffic throughput on most services, although there are still some delays and services levels may still vary amongst customers. Our global teams are continuing to work as quickly as possible to restore full and consistent service across all regions.
