Report Hints at Two New iPads This Year

Digitimes is reporting that there will be two new iPad models launched this year. When they say two models, they don’t just mean black and white or 3G vs non-3G. They actually mean that a second and cheaper iPad will be launched to target the mid-range price of $299. The main difference will be that the high-end model which is priced around that of the current iPad 2 will have a higher resolution screen. Both the high-end and mid-range models will use the Apple A6 processor.

Sources from Apple’s supply chain have claimed that there will be two versions of the new iPad, one targeting the high-end segment and the other the mid-range. Digitimes Research believe the two new iPad models will both be equipped the A6 processor with high-end model coming with a high resolution panel (2048×1536) and the mid-tier model featuring the same grade of panel as iPad 2 (1024×768).

I personally don’t think this will happen. Instead, we’ll see the iPad 2 drop a little in price and become the budget model and Apple will then release a new iPad 3 in two variations (3G and non-3G) each in black or white with various memory capacities. Now that the 4S works on both GSM and CDMA, we believe the iPad 3 will adopt that same ability by being a worldpad so to speak.

If you want my predictions I suggest it will have a higher resolution screen (still 9.7 inches). Higher res camera(s), A6 processor and perhaps use the same design as the iPad 2. Perhaps Apple will bump up storage and include more RAM in there, but don’t expect too many radical changes at once as some will be kept away until the technology drops enough in price to justify putting them in there… and of course leave something for the iPad 4 to differentiate with.
