iPhone 4S Unlockers Should Avoid iOS 5.0.1

Apple is making it increasingly hard to jailbreak and unlock the iPhone. At the moment, the iPhone 4S cannot be jailbroken or unlocked although soon a jailbreak will be launched to address part of it.

For those of you still running an iPhone 4S on iOS 5 then it’s time to update to 5.0.1, but before you do, read on below for a caveat that might make you change your mind.

The problem with the 4S is the lack of an unlock at the moment. The only way to get an unlocked iPhone 4S is to buy it unlocked without a contract. To better your chances of being able to unlock the 4S at a later date, MuscleNerd has recommended you stay as low on iOS as you can. With the iPhone 4S that’s iOS 5.0.

The reason is that it is more likely that a vulnerability will be found in the older baseband. This is where hackers will focus efforts on. If the 5.0 baseband is unlockable then this will be tackled before the baseband of 5.0.1.

There is no guarantee that an unofficial unlock will be made available for the 4S, but reports are indicating that some success was found recently although nothing has been made official just yet.

So, to summarise…
If you just want to jailbreak an iPhone 4S then update to iOS 5.0.1 before iOS 5.1 is released.
If you want to also unlock, then stay on iOS 5.0. We have heard that Apple still signs both iOS 5.0 and 5.0.1 which means there are ways to roll back to the older version. Act quickly though as Apple could release iOS 5.1 any time in the next few days or weeks.
