iOS 5 GM Release Will See iCloud Backups Reset

Later on this week the iCloud service is being wiped by Apple in preparation for the GM release of iOS 5. There will be an outage between 9am PDT and 5PM PDT where no backups can be created and any backups of an iOS 5 device created before this date will also be wiped.

After the maintenance window is iOS 5 GM devices will do a complete fresh backup of all data.

The information was published on the Apple iOS developer forums and says the following:

On Thursday, September 22, the iCloud Backup data will be reset. Backing up to iCloud or restoring from an iCloud backup will be unavailable from 9 AM PDT – 5 PM PDT. If you attempt a backup or restore during this time, you will receive an alert that the backup or restore was not successful. After this reset, you will be unable to restore from any backup created prior to September 22. A full backup will happen automatically the next time your device backs up to iCloud.

If you don’t want to lose any data through the backup window then we recommend an iTunes backup of your iOS device and then a manual backup after the maintenance window closes so that iCloud then has the latest copy of all your iPhone or iPad data.
