Garmin and ASUS have announced the nuvifone M10 smartphone today that runs the Windows Mobile platform which Garmin-Asus say it ideal for business use. The phone, as the name suggests, is another satnav/smartphone convergence that allows users to carry an all in one device that has Garmin’s expertise in navigation built in while offering full support in Windows Mobile for Exchange services allowing business users to keep in touch.
‘The Garmin-Asus M10 is a powerful time-saving tool that is designed for anyone who is tired of carrying numerous devices and instead wants to carry one device that gives them many of the same features found on a stand-alone phone, laptop, PND and digital camera, said Cliff Pemble, Garmin’s president and COO.
Windows Mobile 6.5.3 is the exact version running on this phone which “attempts” to be finger friendly and is an intermediate step to Windows Mobile 7 that is scheduled for later this year although it is not known currently if Garmin-Asus will push out a WM7 upgrade to this phone when available.
Technical specs show that a 3.5 inch WVGA screen can be found along with a 3D Task Manager. 512MB of RAM and 512MB of ROM are found in the device and 4GB of flash memory is used for storing files such as your pictures, music and any other data. Powering the phone is a 1500mAh battery which should be good for a number of hours of use. A soft keyboard can be used on screen providing full QWERTY access for writing messages. For connectivity the phone has HSDPA as well as Wi-Fi at 802.11b/g.
GPS allows for location based services and Garmin have designed the navigation system to link directly to core programs so that you can easily click to navigate from contacts, email, a browser window and messaging.
On the navigation aspect of the phone it has fairly advanced features for a satnav unit with functions such as lane assist to help you get in the right lane when getting to busy junctions.
The Garmin-Asus nuvifone M10 should be ready to ship within a few months according to their press release. Hopefully the M10 won’t suffer the delays of the older nuvifone’s that suffered long delays last year.
