Galaxy S II Ice Cream Sandwich Update Coming March 15

Some good news for Samsung Galaxy S II owners was announced today. We now hear that Samsung will be pushing out the Ice Cream Sandwich update on March 15th. This will take it from its current 2.3 Gingerbread version to the latest Android 4.0 version.

Back in December, Samsung promised an update within the first quarter of the year for a number of Galaxy class smartphones. It seems that they are beginning to keep that promise with this update. Although it was announced as arriving on March 15, that announcement looks to have gone out a little early as it has now been removed from the official Facebook page (in Israel).

The Google translated text read as follows:

We promised we were working on it. You waited patiently. And on 15 March it’ll arrive: Android version 4, ICS, to tens of thousands of GALAXY S II devices purchased from cellular companies in the country or directly from us. We are very excited for the launch, hope you are too 🙂

So, with that we don’t exactly know how the rollout will work or if it will be global. What we assume is happening here is that Samsung Israel just hit the announcement button a tad too early and that we’ll soon see an official update on the status come by Samsung in the next few days. What backs up the claim is that a number of Ice Cream Sandwich builds for the Galaxy S II have been leaked over the last few months which have showed the progress which Samsung is making to port it over.

Expect to hear more soon.
