Estimation – 120,000 Apple iPads Pre-Ordered on Day 1

Apple [AAPL] started allowing people to pre-order the Apple iPad in the US where we will see the Wi-Fi model shipping April 3 and the iPad Wi-Fi + 3G models shipping late April. Both models of all capacities can be pre-ordered now.

A team at Investor Village AAPL Sanity board did some analysis of numbers and estimate that 124,596 items were ordered on the Apple site on Friday March 12 with 16,500 of those being other items that are normally ordered. They also estimated that per person an average of 1.11 iPads were ordered bringing the total up to 119,987 iPads pre-ordered in the first day.

Out of those models it seems like 31% ordered the Wi-Fi + 3G model while 69% ordered just the Wi-Fi model. Out of those models it seems like each iPad capacity was sold in an almost equal amount with 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models taking each 32% to 33% of sales each. Only a very slight preference to the cheaper model was found as well as the most expensive 64GB Wi-Fi + 3G model also being slightly higher.

It is expected that 1 Million units might be sold by the end of April although it could be as low as 300,000.

The project is ongoing as no official details have been launched about the numbers although they were gathered by Victor Castroll who is often right on with numbers, they could still potentially be quite a way out. If you want to contribute to the numbers email [email protected] and send your order number with the last three digits Xed out along with how many iPads you ordered, what time, what time zone, memory capacity and which model you ordered.

It will be interesting to see if the numbers match up “if” Apple reveal the official details. Either way there seems to be a lot of interest in the device which will already be making millions of dollars even before it is launched. Not a bad achievement!
