Cyanogen Mod 9 will Use Ice Cream Sandwich

The CyanogenMod team has begun work on the next version of its custom Android ROM. The new version will be CyanogenMod 9 and it will be based on Ice Cream Sandwich. Confirmation has come by way of a tweet from Steve Kondik.

A release date is not known at the moment although the team estimates about 2 months worth of work before the launch which gives a provisional date of about January 15 2012.

The new ROM will be based on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and actually sees the team skipping Android Honeycomb which would have been CyanogenMod 8. The reason for dropping Honeycomb is that Ice Cream Sandwich is designed for both the tablet and the smartphone and utilizes some of the source code of Honeycomb. The team believes that the time is best spent working on the Ice Cream Sandwich build.

The development team will continue to work on CyanogenMod 7.2 which is the latest Gingerbread build available. Work on this version will continue throughout the CM9 development work.

As for the final release of CM9 coming in January (estimated), you can expect to see some alpha and beta builds a lot sooner than that to allow the brave to test on their live smartphone.
