Asus U Series Laptops

asus-u20Asus have provided details of their latest line of laptops in the U series. The designs are similar to the MacBook Air and larger and faster then the Eee PC 1008HA. 3 versions of the U series are being launched with the first being named the U20A which has a 12 inch screen. The next is the UX30 which has a 13.3 inch screen and finally the UX50V which features a 15.6 inch screen.

Processors vary on each model with the entry level being supplied with either a 1.2GHz Celeron M. The mid range and higher models (UX30 and UX50V) have either a 1.3GHz Pentium, 1.4GHz Core 2 Solo or a 1.6GHz Core 2 Duo.

Each U series laptop is no thicker then 1.2 inches at the thickest point with the UX30 being the thinnest overall at just 0.9 inches at the most across it’s length. That particular model weighs just 3.5 points due to the lack of a DVD burner which are present in other models.

Wi-Fi can be found in each of the laptops and it is compatible with 802.11n networks making it nice and fast on that side of things. Bluetooth is also included. Each of the screens are backlit by LED and they all support harddrives up to 500GB in size. 4GB of RAM can also be crammed inside them.

On the graphics side of things the smaller models use Intel GMA 4500 graphics. The larger of the laptops bumps that up to a GeForce G 105M card which includes 512MB of memory.

The U81A, U80V, U50G and U51Vg are thicker and heavier but also have LED backlights and full notebook-class processors that start from the 2GHz Pentium dual-core and scale up to a 2.66GHz Core 2 Duo. As the starter, the U81A has a 14-inch display, GMA 4500 video and the same storage and RAM features as the larger ultraportables. The U80V adds a 512MB Mobility Radeon HD 4570 graphics chipset for much faster 3D while keeping the same screen. Finally, the very similar U50G and U51Vg both get larger 15.6-inch panels and GeForce G 105M graphics.

The Asus U series look fantastic I have to say and well worth keeping an eye out for. No pricing or availability information is known just yet, but they shouldn’t be too far away.

Very nice looking laptop I wonder if they’ll be making a 13″ version, with an internal DVD drive and dedicated graphics? I can’t decide if i should go for the u80v or for the benq s42 ($330 cheaper) which has similar specs.
