The 8pen is a replacement for your regular virtual keyboard on an Android smartphone. The 8pen is a keyboard that detects gestures and allows you to slide your finger around the layout pictured above to write your message.
The creators of 8pen say that it is actually quicker to enter text with this keyboard than it is a traditional virtual QWERTY keyboard although it does require that you learn the system, which is also said to be quite easy.
To type, you use gestures to spell out the letter. With those gestures being simple it apparently reduces the amount of mistakes you can make when entering text.
