Marvell have unveiled a small PC that is called the Plug Computer 3.0. The Plug Computer 3.0 comes with integrated wireless connectivity as well as a built-in hard drive. As well as having the connectivity and storage built-in the Plug Computer runs a 2GHz Armada processor.
Plug Computers can be used for a variety of things including streaming video’s to a nearby TV, playing music over Wi-Fi to a stereo wireless receiver and allowing for connectivity to a number of gadgets around the home.
‘With unprecedented integration and very low power design, Plug Computer 3.0 offers a powerful, yet compact, and green development platform to accelerate the development and availability of innovative software and services in the home, said Dr. Simon Milner, Vice President and General Manager, Enterprise Business Unit, Communications and Consumer Group at Marvell. ‘Following the shipment of more than 10,000 SheevaPlug¢ development kits to date, we’re confident that this will be a transformational year, where innovative concepts organically fuel a new generation of rich applications to go hand-in-hand with the always-on lifestyle.
Other features could include home automation, medical monitoring, content sharing, security and access control, industrial automation, agriculture and mesh/grid computing to name a few things.
The Plug Computer is designed to always be on and can draw 1/10th of the power of a regular computer making it very efficient.
