Windows Phone 7 Hack Lets you Bypass the Marketplace

The ChevronWP7 tool is a handy bit of software that allows you to sideload apps on to your Windows Phone 7 smartphone which essentially, bypasses the Windows Market Place. Windows Phone is generally locked for those who are not developers.

The software is compatible with Windows based computers that run Windows XP service pack 2 and newer. The software is described as being able to unlock the device (not in a carrier unlock way) which basically makes the device in to a developers phone without going through the approval process.

To make it all happen you simply need to download the software found at the link above, connect up your Windows Phone 7 smartphone to your PC with a USB cable and run the executable. If you don’t want to use the tool anymore, the tool has a system in place that allows you to relock the device.

The website behind this project does mention a few things that might get in your way when using the tool such as making sure you run at lease SP2 on XP. Also, you need to make sure your device is connected with the Zune client in a full sync relationship as opposed to just a guest setup. Finally, if you have problems with the Windows Phone SDK not being installed, the chevronWP7 site has a registry key you can fix so that the unlock happens as usual.

One thing to note is that this isn’t a full jailbreak of Windows Phone 7. You are simply unlocking a locked feature with the ability to relock it after you are done if you so wish.
