Reactor Watch – Lights up for 10 Years

Reactor Watch
If holding your watch up in the light for a few minutes to make the hands glow is not enough, then the Reactor watch feature tritium-filled tubes which will keep the thing alight for around 10 years. The watch is named the Superluminova and recharges instantly with just a small amount of light which then keeps it illuminated for up to 10 years. That’s a long time and I sincerely hope you do not plan on staying in the dark for 10 years to test if it stays lit for that long.

It will set you back $300 – $450 over at Reactor Watch.

Nixie Tube Wrist Watch

Nixie Tube Digital Wrist Watch
The Nixie tube wrist watch is fairly simple in operation in that you press a button to illuminate the Nixie Tubes. It runs by a AA battery which can power the watch for 6 months if the time is viewed about a dozen times a day. Only 25 of these beautys were ever made. Time is kept by 2 watch type batteries which last around 6 months and are independent of the Nixie Tubes. It measures 2.75 x 1.5 x 1.2 inches and the tubes have a soft orange glow which the original Nixie Tubes had.

It costs $495 although they are now sold out a long time ago. I only just came across them today. Maybe you could try your chances on eBay 🙂

Nike+ Amp iPod Watch

Nike Watch

The Nike+ Amp is a watch from Nike which you use with your Nike+ iPod running kit. The watch allows you to get instant progress on your running distance, time, speed or calories burned.

It also works as a regular watch, with a durable polyurethane strap and LED’s whch tell the time in regular mode or display the iPod Nano’s controls when being used in Nike+ mode.

The watch is reasonably priced too at $80, which I think is good since it can be used as a regular watch too! It’s currently only available in USA, but hopefully it’ll be released in Europe soon.

Ball and Magnet Watch – The 900 Abacus

abacus_watch_silver
Watches are getting very interesting over the last few years which LED watches becoming quite popular from Tokyo Flash. Often they are made from slightly different materials to get a sleek look. The latest I came across was the 900 Abacus watch which uses a ball and magnet to tell the time. There are no hands or numbers on the watch. To tell the time you take a look at the magnetic sphere which moves around the face. The sphere is not fastened down and when you walk around the sphere moves around freely under the glass till you hold the watch flat. At this point the sphere rolls to the correct time. As it only has 1 sphere, it only tells time by hours which means you need to roughly estimate how many minutes past the hour it is.

The watch is also water resistant down to 30 meters.

The watch prices will start just short of $150 with more information available at Questodesign.

Timex have created the Ironman watch which has the ability to control your iPod. It works by using a 2.4GHz dongle attached to the iPod. With the watch you can perform various features including skip, play and pause. Engadget unboxed one recently.

I think the watch actually looks quite impressive and I do hope it will perform well.

Watch YouTube in ASCII

ASCII Youtube
Warren Harding has designed a program that allows you to watch YouTube videos in ASCII text. It was a test to see if he could access youtube without a nice GUI. He literally created a program which has all the menus and you just choose the video you want to play and it converts it in to ASCII text right on screen.

The Operating System running this is Linux Fedora 6 and it uses a lynx based browser to search for the videos. Check out the video of it working after the jump.

Pay by Wristwatch

Mastercard Paypass Wristwatch
Mastercard has introduced a new way of paying for items. This time the service uses a device in your watch which stores your card details. One swipe of your watch would allow you to make payments of no more then 15 Euros without having to sign or get out your card. No details are provided as to using a pin number to still authorise the payment which would make it a lot more secure. Hopefully that bright orange watch is not the onlt design and shape it comes in or that could hinder progress of this idea. Having your own watch customised with these features could be a better way forwards though.

Transformers Watches

Optimus Prime WatchLED Transformers Watch
With the release of Transformers the movie coming sometime soon, a range of Transformers watches have been revealed. Unfortunately the watches do not completely transform, but they do have a couple of cool selections for you to browse. The ones that I like are the Optimus Prime watch and the LED Transformers watch. Both look cool. No price has been set for the watches made by Seiko, but we do know they should be available in a couple of weeks on the 2nd June which will be in plenty of time for the release of the movie.
