Skiff e-reader gets a Hands-on at CES

Engadget managed to get some hands-on time with the Skiff e-reader that we mentioned a couple of days ago.

The Skiff has an 11.5 inch screen that has an impressive resolution of 1,600 x 1,200 pixels. It allows a full newspaper page to be loaded up with ads and yet be still readable. The e-reader is not a one off device as we are looking at a publishing platform here. Four different devices are being loocked at including a colour e-reader and applications to load up on the Palm Pre as well a the Viliv MID. [Read more…]

Samsung Announce New Digital Cameras at CES

Samsung have launched a new line of digital cameras at CES this year.

The first new set of cameras are the Samsung TL-Series that feature two screens. The second screen on these two cameras is forward facing allowing you to take self portrait shots without missing yourself. The second screen measures 1.5 inches and sits to the left of the lens of the camera. The two cameras are called the Samsung TL210 and the Samsung TL205. The TL210 is the slightly improved camera that has a 12.4 megapixel sensor vs the TL205 that has a 12.2 megapixel sensor. The TL2010 also has better optics allowing for 5x optical zoom where as the TL205 has 3x optical zoom. The former also has a wider angle lens at 27mm vs the 35mm lens of the latter camera. Skype for TV Coming this Year

Skype have announced that they are soon to launch Skype functionality for HD TV’s. Some new TV’s in 2010 will come with Skype firmware installed allowing for calls to be made through the TV allowing users to step away from the computer.

Also new Skype software for the PC has been launched. The new version is Skype 4.2 Beta that allows users to make HD calls from their PC at a 720p resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels.

Microsoft Muscle Control System lets you play Air-Guitar Hero

A new system has been created by Microsoft that could see Guitar Hero being played with an air guitar. The system is called the muscle computer interface.

The new technology uses EMG sensors places around muscles in the arms that detect movement from your hands and fingers. By placing the sensors on to the arm it allows for a more hands free operation for times when you are unable to hold a remote control or game controller. Other ideas are that of controlling an iPod type device while jogging allowing you to switch tracks or change volume by just flexing a muscle or two. [Read more…]

Google Chrome OS Tablet being built by HTC

Tablets are getting a lot of mention these last months with mentions of the JooJoo and the Apple iSlate recently. Of course Google can’t be left behind in all the fun and information has now leaked saying that both Google and HTC are working together (for the last 18 months) on a Google Chrome OS tablet device.

The source actually mentions that Google have collaborated with HTC on a few test models with one of them running Chrome OS and perhaps the others running Android. [Read more…]

String Treo App Lets you use an iPhone as an Air Violin

If you fancy your chances as an air violinist then check out the String Treo app that lets you play the Violin, Viola or Cello just like you’d play the air guitar.

The application has 20 classical and folk songs for you to play along to and the application is capable of detecting the angle and movement of the iPhone and convert the movement in to string sounds familiar to the said instruments. [Read more…]

ASUS ECleaner Robot Vacuum Revealed

A few robotic vacuums have shown up this last week with LG creating the RoboKing, Neato creating the Neato XV11 both of which are set to tackle the Roomba. ASUS have also revealed a new robot vacuum called the ECleaner which also is aimed at tackling the automatic home cleaning section of the market.

The ECleaner ads another feature to automated vacuuming by adding a 6000 hour UV light that is used to disinfect the floor and emit fragrances. [Read more…]

Control your Computer with the Wave of a Hand

Gesture-Based-ComputerA new gesture capture system has been created that allows you to wave your hands in front of a computer screen to control objects on the screen. This new system is still in early stages, but a big step up here is that it requires no gloves to control it.

The system works by using a Bi-Directional screen called BiDi that has a screen and behind it that shows a pinhole array pattern. The backlight is alternated with the image allowing the screen to show an image as well as capture what is in front of the screen. By using optical sensors behind the glass a hand can be captured and gestures calculated without the user needing to touch the screen. [Read more…]

Google to offer Pay TV on YouTube

youtube_1080pGoogle [GOOG] is looking in to a pay TV system on their YouTube site that will allow users to pay to watch episodes of premium content. The service is said to be taking on the iTunes service.

The cost per episode is rumoured to be $1.99 which would be the same was what Apple charges iTunes users although in the early stages it seems that Google and YouTube will be offering a lot less. The reason being that if you download from iTunes the episode can be shared among a number of Apple devices that includes iPod’s, iPhones as well as Apple TV and your Mac. [Read more…]

Google Phone “Is a Certainty”

Google-PhoneRecently we mentioned that the Google Phone was being worked on and that perhaps, it is to have an early next year launch. A trusted source mentioned recently to Gizmodo that the Google Phone “is a certainty” along with a bit more information about what we can expect from a phone.

The Google Phone is not another phone that runs Android… it is actually a phone built (perhaps we should say branded) by Google [GOOG] that will apparently run a new “real” version of Android. The version of Android running on this new hardware will be different to what has previously been seen such as 2.0 on the Motorola DROID or the even more recent news of Android 2.1 running on the HTC Hero. Apple File Intrusive Ads Patent

bill-ipod-clickthroughReports of a new approved patent that Apple [AAPL] filed have been found recently. The patent discusses ads which require users to interact with a device by perhaps acknowledging they have read the ad, or performing some action. NYT seems to think it will take us back 10 years by forcing ads upon a user, but on the other hand, Fake Steve Jobs indicates we could look at it a different way in that users pay a small nominal fee for watching TV for example… ad free.
