Nokia N8 Photography Capabilities Demonstrated on Video

Nokia [NOK] will be launching the Nokia N8 in August. The Nokia Conversations YouTube channel has a few videos uploaded with one of them detailing the Nokia N8 photo editing along with the video editing functions of the device.

The video shows a few examples of how to browse through photos and although not the most exciting of things to watch, it does move on to the video editing functions of the phone where transitions can be made between clips that have been combined together. The application actually looks very good and seems that with the mix of a high resolution camera and some nice transition features it could be a good selling point for the Nokia N8. [Read more…]

Apple iPhone 4 Antenna Could fix Dropped Call Problems

If you watched the D8 interview last week with Steve Jobs, you might have noticed a question about dropped calls and call availability. Steve said something along the lines of reception “should be getting a lot better soon” on the AT&T network. We first thought that this was all related to AT&T making changes to their network and upgrading it across the US, but after watching the WWDC keynote yesterday, we noticed a lot of information was given about the new antennas included on the iPhone 4. It appears that both Apple [AAPL] and AT&T are working on fixing the issues.

You might have noticed that there are 3 gaps in the stainless steel band that wraps around the edges of the iPhone. These are not a design flaw, but rather a feature of the phone that separates the stainless steel band in to three sections that makes the whole structure of the phone act as antenna. The left side section of band handles the GPS, Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity while the right side band and lower band (that also stretches over the top of the device) handles UMTS and GSM connectivity. Having the whole structure of the phone act as an antenna should hopefully give a stronger signal and hence, fewer dropped calls or fewer “searching” messages that often show up in the status bar. BlackBerry OS 6 on BlackBerry 9800 Video Walk-through

First off, an apology to those who cannot watch the video below. It is restricted to certain regions. If you can view it then there’s around 16 minutes of video walking through the new BlackBerry OS 6. The video shows the new BlackBerry 9800 running OS 6 and over at IntoMobile, there are also a bunch of fresh pictures showing the slider phone and the new OS up close.

BlackBerry [RIMM] looks to be doing a good job with OS 6 making the operating system better than previous versions. A few things to note is that there is no SurePress. A T-Mobile [DT] SIM card is running inside and some of the technical specs show that the 9800 will have 4GB of storage built in along with 512MB of RAM. Wireless 802.11n will also be included. Yesterday we wrote about a new pocket sized 3D HD camcorder that was launching soon called the Aiptek 3D. We now see that Amazon has a pre-order page up for the camera with a price tag of $199.

The camera has two lenses each with a 5 megapixel sensor behind and are capable of capturing 3D HD at 720p. The screen on the front of the device measures 2.4 inches. Apple iPad Could Kill of in-flight Movies

The CIO of Jetstar believes that the Apple iPad could eventually replace in-flight entertainment systems. By giving passengers an iPad to use (ie, renting it out), it allows them to watch movies, browse the web (internet not confirmed) and interact more with a large screen device.

“A lot of airline customers do this now with iPods [and] MP3 players; however, the usage take-up was limited by size of the screens,” he said.

This interview was first uploaded to the web on January 29 by ZDNet. [Read more…]

Aiptek 3D Camcorder Launching

The Aiptek 3D camcorder is a budget camera that when launched will cost around $200.

As the name suggests, it can capture video in 3D thanks to having two lenses. The camera is similar to the Flip, Kodak Zx1 and other USB style cameras in that it easily connects to a PC or Mac to transfer captured video.

The specs of the camera show that it has two lenses each with 5 megapixel sensors. This allows 3D HD footage to be captured at a resolution of 720p. The screen measures 2.4 inches and is a 3D panel allowing you to see the 3D video without glasses. Red and Cyan glasses are also included so that when you play video back on your computer or TV, you can watch it in 3D. [Read more…]

HTC Legend AMOLED Screen Has Problems with Grayscale

Some people have reported problems with their HTC Legend smartphones. The problem appears to be the way it shows grayscale colours in that it cannot show them properly.

The HTC Legend uses an AMOLED display which was criticised for the problems which prompted Tweakers to investigate further.

To do this the website used colour-testing equipment where the could test to see exactly what was happening under a microscope. The screen on the Legend did show problems with pink, grey, brown and green showing up rather than just grayscale (seen in the larger image below). [Read more…]

Steve Jobs Interview on D8

Last night, Steve Jobs was interviewed at D8 and a number of things were spoken of. Nothing said was particularly new as we expected, but the interview gave some great insight in to how and why Apple [AAPL] makes the decisions it does. The reason nothing particularly new was announced is that the WWDC event is starting this coming Monday which is where we will hear all the good stuff.

In no particular order we should add, the first thing we will mention is about the iPhone OS and where it all started. It was quite a surprise when Steve said in effect that the iPad came first. iPhone OS was designed to run on a tablet originally at which point Steve said that it would make a great phone. Apple switched to creating the iPhone and of course, the iPad followed about 3 years after that. [Read more…]
