Sony Could Launch iTunes Competitor

Sony could be launching a service that would tackle iTunes. The new service could be announced as early today which also coincides with the September 1 Apple [AAPL] event being held in a few hours time which is expected will also reveal a streaming service.

It is expected that the system will revolve around the Sony PlayStation 3 games console and then roll out to Vaio computers and Bravia HDTV’s later on in the year. Also Sony Ericsson mobile phones are expected to get the services if rumours are correct. [Read more…]

Sony Reader eBook Devices Announced

Sony has launched three new Sony Reader devices which bring a number of new features to the table.

The first is the Sony Reader PRS-350 Pocket Edition. This particular model costs $179 and has a 5 inch screen. Next up is the Sony Reader PRS-650 Touch Edition that has a 6 inch screen which has a price tag of $229. Finally the Sony Reader PRS-950 Daily Edition is the 7 inch model that costs $299.

Price wise, they are quite expensive it seems, especially when comparing it to the Nook or Amazon Kindle that recently saw price drops. [Read more…]

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Android 2.1 Update Coming September

For those of you in the UK, an interesting tweet was sent out that indicates an X10 Android 2.1 update will be arriving at the end of September.

The tweet came from Sony Ericsson UK and says…

@KOR_9S We can only confirm that the upgrade to Android 2.1 is due for release before the end of September this year. We hope this helps.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 to Cost Less Than $300 Unlocked

Back in June this year, Sony Ericsson announced the Xperia X8. After a few months of waiting we finally are seeing some more details about it. Engadget also managed to get a hands-on with the smartphone to see what it’s all about.

First impressions reveal that the X8 is a little chunky, rather than slim. It has a 3 inch screen, a 600MHz CPU and a 3.2 megapixel camera.

The downside of the X8 is that it also runs Android 1.6 along with a very deep custom skin. An update to Android 2.1 is expected in the 4th quarter of this year although there was no mention of Android 2.2 or perhaps 3.0 which most people will be looking out for at that time. [Read more…]

Sony Alpha a33 and a55 Announced

As well as launching the Sony Alpha a560 and a580, Sony is also launching the a33 and a55 digital SLR cameras.

The A55 and A33 digital SLR cameras use a new translucent mirror technology that allows for autofocus to function at up to 10 frames per second on the A55 and up to 7 fps on the A33.

Each camera is capable of capturing full HD AVCHD video. The A55 has a 14.2 Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor while the A33 has a 14.2 sensor. [Read more…]

Sony Alpha a580 and A560 Announced

Sony has added a number of new digital SLR cameras to the Alpha range. Two of these new camera include the Sony a560 and the a580 which both come with a 3D sweep panorama feature.

Each camera is capable of capturing HD video at 1080i and 29.97 frames per second. The A580 has a 16.2 megapixel sensor while the A560 has a 14.2 megapixel sensor.

Allowing you to create seamless, ultra-wide pictures with a huge field of view of up to 224 degrees. Even at the lowest horizontal panoramic setting you’ll get a field of view of 108 degrees: that’s equivalent to a wide angle lens with a focal length of just 14mm and 3D panoramas can be enjoyed on any compatible 3D HD television.

Sony Reader Touch Edition Discontinued

Recently, some details of a new Sony Reader were found online which indicated a couple of new models would be incoming.

The Digital Reader is reporting today that the Sony PRS600 has now been discontinued which indicates the previously mentioned PRS-650 model could be incoming soon.

The discontinued status normally appears on a third party website when a retailer tries to order a new batch of that model to sell and is told there are none available. [Read more…]

Sony a560 and a580 Leaked

Two new Sony Alpha cameras have leaked on to the internet. The first is the Sony a560 and the second, the Sony a580.

The Sony a560 has a 14 megapixel sensor. The camera it’s self is similar to the Sony a33 that we mentioned the other day although this one is not a pellix camera. The ISO range of the camera works from 100-12800. It is capable of capturing video in 1080i. The camera has 15 AF points with some of those cross-point. [Read more…]

Sony Single Wire Interface Technology Developed

Sony is working on a new technology that will allow facilitate both power and data transmissions through a single cable. The current method to connect up to an LCD screen for example is to use a series of cables in a ribbon format.

This technology enables the internal wiring of a mobile device to be streamlined through a single cable (copper wire). Conventionally, the video, audio and control signals as well as the power transmission were spread out over several dozen cables within the movable mechanisms of mobile devices, such as hinges or rotating parts. Sony aims to promptly implement this technology to improve design flexibility, reliability and durability for mobile devices with movable mechanisms.

Sony Reader eBooks to Last One-Third Longer Per Charge

A couple of new Sony Reader eBook devices are launching soon. We first heard about them a couple of weeks back where we expected them to be thinner than the current versions.

From what the poster above (larger below) shows, the two new Readers are called the Sony Reader Pocket Edition and the Sony Reader Touch Edition.

Each appears to have a new user interface. The pocket edition will have a 5 inch display while the touch edition will be a little larger at 6 inches. Other details include a couple of thousand extra page turns per charge taking it up to 10,000 page turns per battery. [Read more…]

Sony a33 and a55 Swivel Screen DSLRs Unveiled

Some pictures of a couple of new Digital SLR cameras from Sony have been found by the Photorumours website. The two new models are the Sony a33 and the Sony a55.

Each camera uses a pellicle mirror to split the light in two directions when pictures are captured. For details on what that means, you can check out this Wikipedia article or see a basic break down below…

A pellicle camera uses a semi-transparent mirror within the light path splitting the incoming picture light beam into two separate beams, both of reduced light intensity. Allowing the light beams to be used for more purposes simultaneously.
