Mobile Phone’s with Blu-Ray?

Vmedia Spice phone and discs
Just as you thought your phone had every feature crammed inside it’s little case, a company has to come along and say “hold on, there’s no Blu-Ray in that phone yet”. Vmedia have created an amazing 32mm diameter optical disc that can fit a full feature length movie on to it in 576p resolution. The tiny optical disc is to be found inside a small cartridge in a similar way to Sony’s Mini Disc (but smaller) and it uses blue laser technology. The capacity of the first single layer discs will be 1GB and this will be doubled to 2GB when the dual layer version becomes available which is expected to be in 2009.

Vmedia have made the whole system be available as a package to mobile phone manufacturers. The component is easy to integrate and is designed to be used in mobile phone, hence, it can be beaten up, dropped and should still function. Power for the device shouldn’t be a concern as it has been designed with low power consumption in mind. Later in 2008 a newer 2nd gen player will be launched which will be just 9.5mm thick.

Normally I would recommend waiting for such a device to mature and iron out all the kinks. However, in the UK we generally change our contracts every 12 months which mean if we buy the first gen as soon as they are available, then by the time the 2nd gen or 3rd gen dual layer are out, we could easily pick up a new phone with that technology in.

Although this is exciting news I am still wondering how they will compete with microSD cards which are increasing in capacity and are well over the 2Gb capacity at affordable prices. The good news is that the quality stored on the disc means it can also be inserted in to a player and put on to the big screen, but will it do well? I am not too sure. For some reason the whole idea sounds cool though of having Blu-ray discs on your phone.

iPod in Disguise

iPod Walkman
The iPod can be a much desired item for the thief. They stand out with their white ear phones and wires and occasionally make for an easy target.

This iPod disguise hides the iPod in an old Sony Walkman from back in the 80’s. The cassette that can be seen through the clear plastic on the front is also fake which makes it look even more real.

MacBook Air Revealed

macbook_air1
Yesterday, Apple revealed it’s latest goodies to be made available. This time the winner of the show was the MacBook Air which is a seriously slim MacBook with the option of a flash based hard drive. The MacBook Air has some impressive features with the size of the thing being most noticeable. It measures just 0.76″ thick which is slim compared to a Sony Vaio and it weighs just 3 pounds. The screen is 13.3″ and wide-screen backlit with LED’s. Resolutions range from 720 x 480 up to 1280 x 800. An integrated 37-watt-hour lithium-polymer battery powers the MacBook Air which can keep it running for 5 hours with wireless enabled. That alone is a fairly impressive number. The processors options are either 1.6Ghz or 1.8Ghz and the unit comes standard with an 80GB HDD with the option for a 64GB SSD drive. SSD is the way to go, but does add a hefty number on to the total ($1299 extra). If you can afford to splash our for the extra .2 GHZ and SSD then do it.

For connectivity you are looking at Wireless 802.11n draft specification with backwards compatibility for a/b/g. Bluetooth is 2.1 + EDR (Enhanced Data Rate).

Another nice feature about the MacBook Air is the backlit keyboard and a multi touch mouse pad which works in the same way a multi touch screen on the iPhone works. If you want to zoom, you just gesture with moving your fingers apart etc…

Overall it’s a very nice MacBook and well worth pre ordering.

Power Brick Charger

Power Brick Charger
The Power Brick is a new battery device which is high capacity. It has a 2400Mah capacity allowing it to charge a regular mobile phone or iPod about three times before it needs recharging it’s self. It weighs less then 100g and can be charged by USB. Outputs on this device are a plenty too. It comes with “tips” for Nokia (x2), Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Motorola/Blackberry/mini USB, iPod, PSP and digital cameras. Also in the pack is a retractable USB cable which connects the tips to the battery. Full charge can be held for 3 months and the on/off switch is located on the side. So you do not loose all the bits and bobs included, the package comes with a small white case too.

For those who are out and about a lot, this small package could be a nice source of power should you need to make a call and your phone is dead.

It costs just £14.99 also which is not bad considering it contains all the above tips for a ton of devices.

PSP Hackers releasing 3.71

PSP
A reverse engineered version of the 3.71 Sony firmware has been released by team M33. Rather then me try to summarise the changes made it would be worth you checking out Krizka who has a rundown of all the features and what it all does. Krizka also mentions that Dark_Alex is behind all this who some of you might be aware of him supposedly leaving the scene earlier this year. Homebrew just couldnt keep him away 😉

Casio 60FPS Digital Camera

Casio 60fps
This Casio is a prototype which is capable of capturing 60 frames per second at 6 mega pixels. If you jump back to VGA quality it can even record at 300 frames per second which allows capture of some cool stuff to play back in slow motion. The lens is capable of 12 x optical zoom which is a nice amount too allowing for some good shots at long distances. The camera has a 2.8 inch LCD screen and the CMOS sensor is believed to come from Sony and is a 1/1.8 inch sensor. The camera measures 127.5 x 79.5 x 130.9 mm and weighs 650 Grams.

No information is available yet on what storage is used and how the images are transferred.

Custom PSP Touchscreen

PSP Touchscreen
The PSP has been subject to a number of mods and hacks over the last couple of years. Most of it (if not all) has been down to software and the running of homebrew software. The latest hack is the PSP touchscreen which was created over at Spark Fun Electronics. The PSP touchscreen is a layer that sits above the screen which senses when it is touched. Match this up with an interface and you have a fully fledged touch screen PSP. The screen overlay touchscreen costs just $23.95. There is no mention of compatible software yet and I am sure some kind of homebrew will need to be used to make use of it. Hopefully we will see something soon.

Kawasaki ZX10R with 12 Speakers

ZX10R_12Speakers

12 Speakers on a Kawasaki ZX10R

A modified Kawasaki ZX10R has been built which has 12 speakers around its body which have an output of 1500 watts. To make use of all this power needed to be heard, you have two iPods, a Sony PSP, flat screen with DVD and remote control as well as an input for electric guitar. This is a crazy bike and gives out a lot of noise. I am just not quite sure yet who gets to watch the movies on the DVD player and flat screen when the biker is riding around 🙂 At least he will be heard a few more miles off.

PSP 1Seg TV Tuner Coming Soon

psp tv adapter
Sony are about to launch a 1Seg TV tuner for the Sony PSP. The new TV tuner will not work with your old PSP though as it is designed for the new PSP 2 slimmer version. Unfortunately this TV tuner will not make it to the US in this form although hopefully a regular TV tuner might make it over this way. With it being 1Seg it uses mobile data broadcasting available in Japan. It will be released on September 20th and will cost $57. This is also the release date of the PSP slim edition.

Slim PSP Announced

pspslim
The new slimmer PSP is due to be released September this year. Sony have not dropped the UMD and the screen is still the same size at 4.3 inches. However it is 30% lighter and 19% slimmer which is good news. Along with it shrinking a little in size some cool little features have been added. Load time has been improved for games and also there is a video output which you can hook your PSP up to a TV/projector. When playing games, music, or video you can push a button to toggle between the large or small screen. I am interested in seeing what quality of games are like on a large screen. Hopefully they look just as good as they do on the small screen.

The slim PSP will be available in 2 colours which are Piano Black and Ice Silver. The entertainment pack will include a 1GB memory stick duo, daxter (what ever that is), Family Guy collection and it will set you back $199.

Download your PSP Games – Almost

PSP

Download Sony PSP Games Legally in the future

How would you like to be able to download games for the PSP rather then purchasing the UMD from a shop? It seems like this is the way Sony is moving with the latest firmware releases for the Sony PSP. Both 3.50 and 3.51 versions were opened up and found to contain a module named np9660.prx which is an official ISO loader made by Sony which can load encrypted ISO files from a memory stick. Also you might be aware of a new download service that is being made available by Sony later this year. This could mean that PSP games will be downloadable in the future, hopefully cutting costs and increasing load times with them working right from your memory stick.

Memory sticks were quite small in capacity a few years back when the PSP was launched, but in the last few months we have seen some nice capacity memory sticks which should allow for several games to be stored on them.

This is only rumor at the moment, but with finding the module in the firmware it is a good indication of what could be available in the next few months.

RiteAlarm Clock Review

RiteAlarm Clock
From Rayna Creations comes this compact triple weekly, battery powered, alarm clock. What it means by triple weekly is that you have the option of pre setting the alarm clock for weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays individually. With your average alarm clock you need to manually adjust the alarm setting each time your routine changes, this beauty avoids such annoyance. For me on a personal level I am known to forget to change the settings and either wake the household up, or arrive late for appointments. On the outset it is quite basic looking, but what more do you need? If you are just looking for something that will do its job then this really does suit your needs every day of the week. The rest of the review is after the jump.
