Sony Nav-U Series Split Screen

Sony-NV-U83T
Over at CES, Sony are introducing a couple of new Sat Nav-U units. The new sat navs are model numbers NV-U73T and NV-U83T. What sets it ahead of a number of Sat Nav units is the split screen which allows for a dual view. A common problem when using GPS for navigation is trying to work out exactly which exit to take should there be a few right next to each other. With the split screen set up it zooms in one the right side of the screen to show precisely what turning to take. Also it allows for you to get more familiar with POI (Points of Interest) around the immediate area.

Another feature it has is how it can keep track of you when a weak signal is present. It does they by the way of a pressure sensor, gyro sensor and an accelerometer which can keep a good estimation of where you are travelling.

The 2 units mentioned above are to be made available early in spring this year and can be ordered over at SonyStyle costing $349.99 or $499.99.

Features of the Sony Nav-U83T

The U83T has a 4.8″ touch panel widescreen which also displays information such as live traffic updates. The units available in the US contain map data for the entire United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. Also Bluetooth is available which allows you to hook it up to a mobile phone to use it as a hands free kit. Text to speach is available as well as a unique gesture command. What gesture command does is allows you to use on screen finger movements. An example would be using an inverted V to automatically navigate you home. This allows quicker access to the more common functions that you need.

Traffic updates come via radio reception which is constantly updated and when bad traffic is spotted, you are automatically routed around the problem.

Overall a very nice looking Sat Nav unit from Sony.

Sony Cybershot DSC-H3

sony-cybershot-dsc-h3
The DSC-H3 is Sony’s latest Cybershot camera to be made available. The camera has an ample 8.1 mega pixel CCD and a Carl Zeiss lens. What makes the lens interest me is that it is a 10x optical zoom lens. Having that much optical zoom is far better then digital zoom that is quite common in cameras.

Sony OLED TV Opened Up

Sony OLED Screen
When splashing out a large amount of dollars on a 3mm thin screen the last thing you probably think of is hacking it open to see what’s inside. Of course we are now in the internet age and crazy people are out there which do this type of stuff regularly. Nikkeibp is one example as they have taken the screw drivers to the new Sony thin OLED screen to see what you find inside. Check out another picture after the jump.

Sony HDMS-S1D Digital Photo Album

sony-hdms-s1d
The HDMS-S1D comes from Sony and is a feature packed Digital Photo Album. The device can be attached to a HDTV via a HDMI cable and has an 80Gb hard drive allowing a ton of photos to be stored and kept in 1 location. Transferring files to the device is easy as it sports a number of memory card formats as well as a CD reader, DVD and USB or network connections. Once the photos are on there (50000+) high res, you can file them away by using the remote control on a simple interface. It costs $400 so would be affordable to those who want to take and store a lot of photos. Although nothing is mentioned about backups we can assume the Ethernet cable can be used to transfer files to the PC so you have photos in 2 locations.

Super Skinny Sony TV is just 3mm thin

sony_xel_1_tv
The new XWL-1 TV from Sony is quite an amazing little screen. It has an Organic EL display technology which allows the screen to be just 3mm thin. Quite amazing if you ask me. The screen also measures 11 inches QHD (960×540) and has a good contrast ratio of 1000k:1 with vivid colours. The TV actually has support for HD and has a HDMI input port. Being only 3 mm thin the TV actually sits on a small stand where it appears all the cables and PSU are fitted. This TV will sell for $1734 when it is released in Japan in December. No details of release dates elsewhere are around yet though.

Sony Wall Mountable PC – The L Series

sony_vaio_l_series
The new Sony Vaio L series will be launched soon. The L series are wall mountable PCs with 3 models available. The smallest starts with a 15.4 inch screen moving up to a large 19 and 22 inch screen. The larger versions are equipped with the same wall mounting kit that is build for the Bravia screens. Two different processors are available which are the Intel Celeron M530 and the Core 2 Duo T7500 running at 2.2Ghz. They do look quite nice although if I was to mount it on a wall I think Id prefer even larger models such as 32 inch or larger for windows media centre. Prices start at $1900 for the smaller model.

Sony Rolly

SONY_ROLLY
The Sony Rolly is a robotic toy which is actually a wireless speaker, audio player and has 1GB of internal memory. The Rolly will dance to the music. When listening to music you get about 5 hours of battery life. If you decide to stream music via Bluetooth then battery life drops to 4 hours 30 minutes. It is set to cost $350 when it hits Japan at the end of this month.

I am not sure if this will do well or not. It seems like an odd idea to have an MP3 player rolling around. I dont really get the point.

Sonys Bendable OLED Screen

Here is another short video showing Sonys OLED screen which measures just 0.3mm thick and is very flexible. In this clip you will see the screen bending while video is being displayed. Also an announcement that OLED displays will be available this year in Japan.

Sony-Ericsson PSP Concept

sony-ericsson-psp-phone-concept
Over the last year I have heard a couple of rumors floating about regarding the Sony PSP mobile phone. Currently the ideas are just concept which has inspired the picture above to be created. As can be seen it takes the current Sony Ericsson square looking type phone and includes a large screen and controlls. I am not sure if this concept or any concept will go ahead for the PSP phone, but we can hope for it. The idea could do real well if a cybershot camera, walkman type phone and PSP could be crammed in to the same package. All it would then need is wireless and VoIP and all would be perfect.

Sony Simplifies the Remote Control

Sony Simple Remotes

Sony makes a simple Remote Control for the Telly

If you look at your remote control you will probably notice a ton of features that are never used. Sony have decided to create the simple remote control which has the basic functions that you need. The RM-PZ1FD is pictured above and comes in 3 colours. Also, the remote control is waterproof I guess for those times you are relaxing in the bath watching your nice LCD screen. The remote controlls are being released in August and will set you back $21.

Sony Transparent TV

Sony Transparent TV

Sonys TV and Speakers are Transparent

Sony have created an innovative screen which is transparent. It has a glass face and uses a projector to project the image from behind. It does look quite cool, although quite basic at the same time. Speakers are also included which are also transparent which also look quite cool.

I do not have any other details on this at the moment and I am not sure if/when it will be available to buy.

Sony Introduces a 70 Inch Rear Projection Telly

Sony 70 Inch SXRD
Sony have introduced a 70 inch rear projection TV which is 40% slimmer then a version launched last year. I am impressed with how thin this is for being rear projection and it certainly is a nice competitor to the LCD screens that we see around. The reason it will do well against LCD screens is because it is priced at $6000 which is a lot less then an equivalent LCD screen.

It weighs 200 pounds, so it quite a beast in weight, but they have created this one to look good too. Sony calls it floating glass and as can be seen in the picture above it certainly does look nice.
