Apple iPad Teardown Confirmed

We just posted about iFixit and the iPhone vs Nexus One infographic. Along with the email we received from iFixit, they also confirmed that they will be doing an Apple iPad Teardown on April 3 when the Apple [AAPL] device is launched. At the end of the email from Kyle he said…

P.S. Yes, we will be taking apart the iPad on April 3.
How could you doubt us?! (Props to you if you’re one of the few with faith in us who *have not* emailed me asking whether we’ll disassemble it). I’ll be running my technicians through screwdriver calisthenics all next week to prepare.

The Samsung Galaxy i9000 has been announced. The new smartphone when launched will run the Android 2.1 operating system, feature Samsung’s own Super AMOLED screen in a WVGA resolution of 800 x 480 pixels that measures 4 inches. The Samsung Galaxy will also run a 1GHz processor to keep things running smoothly.

We recently found out that the Motorola DROID was going to be getting an Android 2.1 update this month sometime. The exact date has now been provided and is happening tomorrow (March 18).

The updates won’t all happen at once with some upgrades starting before others although there should only be a day or two delay between updates with them finishing by the weekend from what we understand.

HTC Touch Pro3 Coming in Summer?

There seems to be a few HTC rumours around this week with the latest one being that HTC are working on the HTC Touch Pro3 with a tentative launch date of this summer.

The rumoured information comes from the XDA Developers forums where the information says the device will be smaller and slimmer than the Touch Pro2 (pictured above).

Other than that there is no other information other than it could possibly run Windows Phone 7 Series (assuming it meets the criteria). [Read more…]

Does a Lava Lamp work on Jupiter? Home-Made Centrifuge built to find out

It’s the question on everyone’s mind these days… Does a Lava Lamp work in a high-gravity environment such as Jupiter? Luckily Neil Fraser did all the leg work here and helped answer the question for you putting all our minds at rest.

This amazing experiment comprises of a lava lamp, camera, home-made centrifuge, Google Nexus One and a room large enough to handle a 50 kilo spinning centrifuge.

The centrifuge was built from Meccano and has a diameter of 3 meters. On one side is a holder for a Lava Lamp and Google Nexus One phone (for measuring gravity). On the other side is a camera to record how the lava lamp reacts and in the middle a complex motor system that needs to be oiled and kept running smoothly so it doesn’t spin out of control. The whole unit spins at 42 RPM. [Read more…]

Google Gesture Search for Android Launches

Google have launched Google Gesture Search for Android based mobile phones. The new search system for Google [GOOG] allows you to search everything on your phone by basically squiggling on the screen with your finger. Searchable items include contacts, bookmarks, applications and music. You simply write the letter of what you want on the screen and all the details load up for you.

To get the application you need to be running Eclair as the minimum, ie Android 2.0 and above which narrows the list of phones it works on down to just the Nexus One and Motorola DROID at the moment although more will follow soon. [Read more…]

Google Earth for Android Comparison

Last week we reported that Google Earth was now available for Android 2.1 based phones such as the Google [GOOG] Nexus One.

To get a run down of how it performs on the Nexus One versus the Motorola DROID, AndroidHD have put together a side-by-side comparison. In some cases the Nexus One seems to win hands-down while in others it appears like the DROID and N-One are very similar in what they can handle as well as the speed of the data transfer to get the textures and imagery to the Google Earth application. LG Windows Phone 7 Series Handset Revealed

Last week we mentioned that LG were readying the first Windows Phone 7 Series handset ready for launch sometime between September and November this year.

Engadget managed to take a look at the handset whilst filming the Engadget Show. A quick look at the picture above shows that it appears to have the right things in place to qualify as a Windows Phone 7 Series handset such as it having 3 hardware buttons below the screen and a large high-res screen that’s capacitive touch. HTC HD2 to be First Windows Phone to get Flash – On 7 Series

There’s certainly evidence to support that the HTC HD2 could get an upgrade to Windows Phone 7 Series, but at the same time there isn’t any actual proof except for cryptic Twitter messages and postings on forums etc…

This next rumour comes from an Adobe representative on their forums where he answers questions based on when Flash will be hitting certain mobile devices and different OS’s along with some time-frame questions and answers mixed in.

When asked about the phones the rep replied… [Read more…]

Flash 10.1 Not a Battery Hog

Recently Apple were heard to say that Adobe Flash on a mobile device would kill battery life and give up to an 85% decrease in how long the battery would last. The Apple iPad was specifically mentioned as dropping from 10 hours to just 1.5 hours if Apple allowed Flash on their device.

To try prove these numbers wrong an Adobe evangelist called Mark Doherty has created some evidence along with a video of Flash 10.1 running on a mobile device and the exact effect it has on the battery of a mobile device. By playing a 17 minute embedded video that ran flash, the consumption of flash was just 6% (mixed in with the browser processor usage). The numbers also indicate that H.264 playback over a WiFi connection could allow for about three hours on a single charge. [Read more…]

Quake 2 and 3 Ported to Motorola DROID

Back in 2009 Android and Me posted a competition to see who could port Quake 2 and 3 over to an Android based device. After being forgotten about for a while a winner suddenly appeared. The winner managed to get Quake working on the Motorola DROID and says it should also quite easily port on to the Nexus One.

Two developers have actually managed to get things working well. The first guy is called Julien who managed to create Quake2Android and has managed to get network games and touch based and accelerometer based controls to function. Although it works on the Motorola DROID at a frame-rate of 30 – 40 frames per second, we do hear it also will work on other Android based hardware such as the G1. [Read more…]

Google Android Phones – 60,000 Per Day Ship

Google [GOOG] seem to be doing very well at the moment with the Android operating system and the phones it ships on. Figures revealed recently by the Google CEO, Eric Schmidt show that about 60,000 phones running Android are shipping every single day.

At the rate of 60K per day that equates to about 5.4 million handsets per quarter which is a decent amount of handsets. Although it’s still some way behind the Apple [AAPL] iPhone in terms of sales per quarter (which are at 8.7 million), it’s still a huge chunk considering the amount of time they have been shipping vs the iPhone.
