Amazon Kindle App Coming to Android OS Smartphones

Amazon is releasing a Kindle App for Android OS smartphones. The application, like on other platforms, is free to download and will allow users to read Kindle eBooks on their Android device.

Just like other versions of the Kindle App, the Android version will also include the Whispersync function that allows all your devices running Kindle to be synchronised with bookmarks, annotations and where you were last reading.

‘Kindle for Android is the perfect companion application for Kindle and Kindle DX owners, and is also a great way for customers to enjoy over 540,000 books in the Kindle Store even if they don’t yet have a Kindle, said Jay Marine, director, Amazon Kindle. ‘We think customers are going to love the convenience and simplicity of having instant access to a massive selection of books from Amazon on their Droid, Nexus, Incredible and many more Android devices.

Android 2.2 is 450% Faster than Android 2.1

Some tests have been performed on a Google Nexus One running Android 2.2 (Froyo) vs a Nexus One running Android 2.1.

Early results indicated that in some cases Android 2.2 runs 450% faster than the previous 2.1 OS.

The speed tests were done using a tool called Linpack and the speed increase is believed to be because of JIT compliation in to the kernel. When using Linpack it tests how fast the phone can operate and provides results where you can then compare numbers.

The LINPACK Benchmarks are a measure of a system’s floating point computing power. Introduced by Jack Dongarra, they measure how fast a computer solves a dense N by N system of linear equations Ax = b, which is a common task in engineering. The solution is obtained by Gaussian elimination with partial pivoting, with 2/3*N3 + 2*N2 floating point operations. The result is reported in Millions of FLoating-point Operations Per Second (MFLOP/s, sometimes simply called FLOPS).

Cyanogen brings Android 2.1 to T-Mobile G1 and others

An early build of Android 2.1 has now been made available for the T-Mobile G1, aka HTC Dream and also the HTC Magic. The build isn’t final, but most of the features are functioning on these devices.

You are now able to download the ROM to install on your phone, but Cyanogen does recommend caution as DangerSPL is required on the G1/Dream or you wont be able to install the new ROM. For those with the HTC Magic, the process does not require the DangerSPL to be installed.

A few things to note for those wanting to install DangerSPL is that you need to follow instructions precisely just so you don’t end up turning your phone in to a brick. [Read more…]

Android 2.2 On it’s Way

We reported yesterday that Android 2.2 (Froyo) was in the testing stages with a launch date due in the next month or so. Androidandme have pointed out that their stats software (Google Analytics) has already been seeing some traffic from Android 2.2 devices in the last few days as pictured below.

We checked the gadgetvenue statistics and have also noticed a few visitors using the Android 2.2 OS. Androidandme point out that Android builds only get numbered when close to release and with this information showing up in statistics, it appears that it isn’t too far away now. [Read more…]

Google Android 2.2 Froyo in Testing

The folk at Google [GOOG] are testing Google Android 2.2 from what we hear with a possible release date of May 19th. That date is when the Google I/O developer conference will run.

New features in the Android 2.2 operating system include multi-coloured trackball notifications as well as the OS providing more RAM to the use. Also fixes for touchscreen problems are also going to be included.

As well as offering the above tweaks it is also reported that more access to OpenGL ES 2.0 will be provided to developers. These updates should allow developers to access better graphics capabilities specifically on the Google Nexus One. [Read more…]

Google Tablet in the Works

Google [GOOG] are getting in to the tablet game by creating a Google Tablet. This particular tablet computer they will be making will run the Google Android OS rather than Chrome OS and from what we hear, it will be created by Google (or perhaps as the Nexus One is… created by HTC but sold exclusively by Google).

We have heard of Google Chrome OS based tablets previously, but from what we understand now, Google is actually planning on running Android on this particular tablet. It isn’t clear if they will just run plain old Android 2.1 for example, on the tablet where everything is just spaced out more on the screen, or if a specific Android Tablet Edition OS will be made. ICD Gemini Android Based Tablet – Tegra 2 Based

ICD have introduced a new Android OS based tablet computer. ICD were first seen back in Las Vegas at CES 2010 where a couple of Tegra 2 based devices were on display (the Vega and Ultra). They are now launching the ICD Gemini that also uses the next generation 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra Chipset.

Features included in the ICD Gemini include an 11.2 inch touchscreen. Two screens will be available which include a capacitive and a resistive touchscreen, both of which are multitouch capable.

As previously mentioned, the operating system running on the Gemini will be provided by Google [GOOG], ie, the Android OS although it isn’t clear right now which version. We hope for at least 2.0 or even 2.1, but have seen some devices still running 1.6, so we’ll update when we find that information out. [Read more…]

Android for your Car Coming Soon

Chinese manufacturer Roewe are producing an Android OS based system for cars. it is expected that the new Android Car product will launch as early as this month sometime in April.

The system will run Google [GOOG] Android 2.1 which is also a nice surprise as that version of the OS is currently the latest available to the market. Phones such as the Google Nexus One, Motorola DROID and a couple of others run this OS.

By using Android in a vehicle it allows a number of features to be used on the car such as GPS guidance, navigation as well as web browsing and calls with services such as Skype. The device will have a screen on the centre console allowing for access to the services provided. [Read more…]

HTC Diamond2 Win Mo Phone running Android 2.1

Just a few weeks back we reported that someone had managed to get Google [GOOG] Android running on a HTC Touch Pro2 smartphone. The Touch Pro2 incidentally is a Windows Mobile phone which hasn’t been designed to run the Android OS.

Following on in that vein, someone has also managed to get Android 2.1 running on a HTC Diamond2 smartphone. The previous phone (touch pro2) was running a Nexus One ROM. This time the HTC Touch Diamond2 is running the ROM from the HTC Legend which also brings the HTC Sense user interface to the phone. [Read more…]

Samsung Galaxy S gets Hummingbird Chip to give 3x Polygon Performance

Website Android and Me have been investigating the technical specs of the new Samsung Galaxy S Android smartphone and in that investigation have found that the device runs their new S5PC110 application processor that contains an ARM Cortex-A8 along with a PowerVR SGX540 GPU. The result is that the smartphone is capable of drawing up to 90 million triangles per second.

The Cortex-A8 is referred to as Hummingbird and is claimed by it’s designer Intrinsity, to be the fasted processor around.

90M is a lot of triangles and when compared to other mobile phones it really does put the Galaxy S ahead in terms of graphical capabilities. The numbers below (quoted from Android and Me) show how many triangles per second the four leading devices can handle (which includes 3 Android devices and the iPhone 3G S). [Read more…]
