Earlier today we mentioned that the Samsung Captivate was landing on AT&T [T] in the US on July 18. The Captivate is a Galaxy S phone re-branded for the AT&T network. Likewise, the Samsung Vibrant is also a Galaxy S phone but T-Mobile branded. However, the T-Mobile version seems to be launching a few days earlier on July 15.

The original date for T-Mobile was July 21, which means the new release date is almost a week earlier than originally planned.

If the change of launch date does happen, it will land on the same day as the Motorola DROID X which indicates that Samsung / T-Mobile are trying to put an alternative option in the way of potential DROID X buyers. [Read more…]

AT&T [T] announced that the Samsung Galaxy S was coming to their network but with the name of Samsung Captivate. The Captivate we now hear will be made available in a couple of weeks time on July 18 and will cost $200 on a 24 month contract.

Technical specs of the Galaxy S class phone include a 4 inch AMOLED screen along with a 1GHz processor and a 5 megapixel camera. The phone it’s self is very powerful thanks to the type of processor it uses which allows it to shift three times more triangles per second than the Nexus One by Google [GOOG].

For storage the Captivate has 16GB of internal memory. For connectivity it has Bluetooth 3.0, USB 2.0 as well as Wireless that can connect to 802.11b/g/n networks. [Read more…]

When Google [GOOG] announced Android 2.2 they demonstrated that the new OS managed to increase performance on devices that can run it. The speed increase is possible because of a high performance JIT in the Android Dalvik runtime environment.

When compared to the iPhone 4, the Nexus One performs better in terms of javascript speed. The tests performed over at Arstechnica show that JavaScript runs three times quicker on the Nexue One running Android 2.2.

We compared these findings with that of our tests of Apple’s mobile Safari browser on the iPhone 4. The results show that the Android device delivers significantly faster JavaScript execution than the iPhone, scoring over three times better on V8 and almost twice as fast on SunSpider. Apple has some work to do it if wants mobile Safari to retake the crown as the fastest mobile browser.

Every 14 days, Google [GOOG] runs a report showing what percentage of people run the various Android operating systems. Now that Android 2.2 (FroYo) is being pushed out to Nexus One devices, we are starting to see the new build of the OS show up on the charts.

Android 2.1 continues to take the lions share by being on 53.1% of Android smartphones. This is followed by 1.6 and 1.5 that command 23.5% and 21.3% respectively. Android 2.2 is next with just 1.8% although we need to take in to consideration that only in the last week or so that OS has been made available publicly.

It’s interesting to see the number of devices still running Android 1.5 or 1.6. The 1.5 update has been available a long time now which indicates there are still a lot of older devices around that are unable to update. [Read more…]

We’ve heard quite a bit over the last week about the iPhone 4 and antenna problems that it has. We have seen a few problems ourselves although overall the experience is better than the 3GS in terms of signal. We only find it drops where signal is bordering on being dead but in those situations the iPhone 4 is still able to keep a call running.

Anandtech decided rather than writing about general observations and trying to summarise it in words, like we have and many other places have done, is in fact, use technical data to see how it actually performs. Using the iPhone 4 and writing based on observation just doesn’t get the same message across as facts do.

The tests were conducted by holding the iPhone 4 in various ways such as a strong grip over the antenna joint, flat on the palm and a more casual hold. Signal strength was then recorded for the iPhone 4, 3GS and the Google Nexus One. [Read more…]

Google [GOOG] just rolled out Android 2.2 Froyo to the Nexus One yesterday. HTC are now working on launching Android 2.2 Froyo on to the HTC Desire, Legend and Wildfire although it appears the update wont be available till Q3 this year.

“We are working hard with our partners to update the HTC Sense experience on Froyo [2.2] and distribute it to our customers as fast as possible. We expect to release updates for several of our 2010 models including Desire, Legend and Wildfire beginning in Q3.”

It seems like the Samsung Super AMOLED screen is in short supply forcing HTC to start looking at S-LCD screens manufactured by Sony and Samsung in a joint venture.

From what we understand the HTC Desire, HTC Droid Incredible and Google Nexus One will soon be supplied with one or the other type of screen. From the tests HTC performed the company says that there isn’t really any difference that regular users will notice although somehow it seems they will need to notify customers some how to what type of screen is to be found in the phone. Gizmodo made a very brief announcement today regarding Google Android 2.2 Froyo saying that it has been open sourced and is available today.

Many people are now wondering when it will hit their device. For those with devices such as the HTC EVO 4G, it could be a few months away while HTC make the necessary modifications. For the Nexus One from Google [GOOG] it should be a lot quicker. Update: Any moment now.

Details are a little scarce at the moment but we expect to start seeing a lot more information about it shortly. [Read more…]

Google [GOOG] demonstrated Android 2.2 Froyo about a month ago. When it was first announced the company said that they expect it to be available for Nexus One owners in the next few weeks. A thread over at Google now has over 1275 responses with people asking when it will be available.

Finally a Google employee chimed in and gave the following information…

Hey guys,
Just dropping in to let you know that the FRF72 build that is floating around is not the official update. The Android team is feverishly working to get a final version out the door, but like passion-ate has mentioned this will only happen once a release candidate meets our quality criteria.

Since today is the Summer Solstice, we know things will be heating up a bit so hopefully Froyo will be on its way shortly. Thanks for your continued patience!

Samsung has announced the Samsung Captivate. The Captivate is an Android OS based smartphone that actually looks like it could be good.

The device falls in to the Samsung Galaxy S class of smartphones and has a Super AMOLED touchscreen measuring 4 inches. Powering the Captivate is a 1GHz hummingbird chip that can shift three times the amount of triangles when compared to a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU seen in devices such as the Nexus One.

A 5 megapixel camera can be found on the Samsung Captivate and it is capable of capturing video at a resolution of 720p. For storage, there’s up to 32GB combined with internal and external. [Read more…]

Google [GOOG] has released details of which Android versions are the most popular. This month we see that Android 2.1 has increased in popularity with that version of the OS accounting for 50% of installs on smartphones. Last month Android 2.1 accounted for 37.2%.

Android 1.5 has dropped the most this month from 34.1% down to 24.6%. This is not to say that people have necessarily upgraded, but that Android 2.1 is pretty much standard on new device installs which helps it take more market share as time moves on. [Read more…]
