iOS 4.2 Supports Tech to Reduce Network Congestion
Nokia Siemens has provided some interesting details that indicated the latest iOS 4.2.1 update Apple [AAPL] released last week, includes some new tech that helps reduce congestion on cellular networks. In doing this, it also increases battery life by decreasing network usage on the phone.
Nokia Siemens Networks is one of the worlds top suppliers when it comes to cellular infrastructure. The company also points out that Nokia Smartphones have also included this tech in the basebands of the phones since the beginning of this year. With Nokia and Apple both using the new tech, it will certainly take a lot of strain off the networks given that they account for more than half of the smartphone sales from what NSN says. Netflix for Android Could Arrive in 2011
Netflix is already available on the iPhone and other iOS based devices as well as Windows and a number of consoles. We now hear that Netflix will continue to grow by being made available on Android based smartphones sometime in 2011.
From what we understand, Netflix will not arrive on all Android devices and will more than likely be limited by the OS version and hardware meaning that only newer handsets get it (in the beginning that is). [Read more…]
T-Mobile HSPA+ Network Now in 75 Areas
T-Mobile in the US has announced expansion of its 4G speed networks (running on HSPA+). 75 areas now have access to HSPA+ allowing those within and with compatible devices, to download data at higher speeds.
“4G is about performance and today T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network is delivering 4G speeds that match and often beat WiMAX and are readily comparable to what early LTE will deliver. Our 4G network is capable of theoretical speeds up to 21Mbps and we have seen average download speeds approaching 5 Mbps on our myTouch 4G phone in some cities with peak speeds of nearly 12 Mbps. Further, independent reviewers have seen average download speeds on our webConnect Rocket between 5 and 8 Mbps with peak speeds up to 8-10Mbps,” said Neville Ray, chief technology officer, T-Mobile USA. “The footprint of our 4G service is not something that competitors are going to match anytime soon, and starting today, we will begin marketing our network advantage with TV commercials advertising ‘America’s Largest 4G Network’ from T-Mobile.” [Read more…]

Internet Explored Drops Below 50% Global Market Share
A year ago, Internet Explorer had a global market share of 58.37%. A year later it has now dropped below 50% down to 49.87%.
The browser now making the most progress is Google Chrome that has gone from a 3.69% last year up to 11.54% for global share. Google Offers WebP For Faster Internet
Google [GOOG] is launching a new image format called WebP. What WebP does is squashes down the file size of images to make them smaller, hence, a quicker download for users.
The aim of Google is to make the web faster and this is just another step to make this happen. Typically, the webP format can reduce the file size of a JPEG image by about 40% making images a lot smaller in file size. However, with this format, not much changes in image quality with it not really even being noticable. It’s a bonus in both ways for the end user (and webmaster who pays out for bandwidth usage on his hosting account).
Another interesting thing to note is that 65 percent of traffic on the internet is image traffic according to Google. Cut image sizes down by 40% on average and you have a lot of bandwidth savings. [Read more…]

For me, ‘Sackboy’ has become the new mascot for Sony’s PS3. He’s the star of the hugely successful Little Big Planet wherein you were pretty much free to do more or less anything you wanted and allowed you to fully customize you own sack boy (or girl) with a myriad of various costumes from Metal Gear Solid to Killzone 2, from Street Fighter to God of War or even create your own.
