LAB22 Adjustable Tech Stands on Kickstarter

LAB22 is a series of stands for the iPad, iPhone, and AirPods Max. The iPad stand is compatible with 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pros and the iPad Air 10.9-inch model.

Your iPad attaches magnetically to the stand with the magnets being strong so that you can use the iPad for drawing/typing or as a second screen without the worry of it slipping off. The plate it rests on is fully covered with microfibre so that the contact isn’t metal to metal which could leave scuffs.

The hinge on this iPad is also strong and has 9kgf-cm of torque to hold the iPad in whatever position needed. Briefly, 9kgf-cm is related to how much force is needed to move the iPad on its hinge. Too much, and it won’t move. Too little, and it would drop down and never stay put. The stand can fold down at any angle and move back up, and the plate is also rotatable allowing you to switch between portrait and landscape modes easily.

Very Early iPhone Prototype Revealed

THe picture below shows a very early prototype iPhone. The device measures 5 x 7 inches and has exposed circuit boards along with a number of regular ports such as a serial port, ethernet and USB. It was posted by ARS who got their information from an ex Apple employee who worked on the project (but wants to remain anonymous).

The device is said to be a development prototype so that developers could test software on a real device. Of couse, the physical appearance isn’t even close to the iPhone, but it was good enough to run the necessary software to get the company going.

iOS 6 now on 15% of devices within first 24 hours

The benefits of having just 1 brand of phone using an OS is that the adoption rate is far quicker. Take the iPhone for example, when a new version of the software is made available it generally works on the last 3 or 4 generations of devices and can be installed at the same time. Previously this had to be done with a wire connecting up to iTunes, but since iOS 5 it has been possible to update over the air. This is why iOS 6 is now on 15% of devices within the first 24 hours of release.

Compare the graph below to that of Android OS updates, we can see that Jelly Bean is only available on 1.5% of devices after about 2 months. That is because there are so many Android devices running the operating system that are either not compatible, or awaiting carriers to modify, build and push a new update out.

Here is a graph showing the adoption rate of iOS 6 (created by Chitika):

iPad mini estimated build cost is $189.32

Well, I can’t say I expected to see something written about the build costs of the un-announced and only rumoured iPad mini… but today, I see that someone has added together the cost of all the leaked parts and estimated that it will cost Apple $189.32 to built each iPad mini.

The iPad mini has been rumoured to cost $299 when launched… and I will add “if launched” to that as it has been rumoured each year since 2010 without being launched yet.

NASA Curiosity Landing on Mars video interpolated to increase frame-rate

You might have seen the video that NASA produced which showed the Curiosity being dropped from space down to Mars. The original was taken with a still camera capturing images 4 times a second. Although the results were impressive as they showed Curiosity being dropped down to the planet, they were still a bit clunky as the frame rate was extremely low.

One person, Dominic Muller, decided to use a technique on that video called interpolation. What that means is that the frame rate can be increased to make the video look smoother. This is achieved by putting artificial frame mixed in-between the regular real frames. The results in this case take it from 4fps to 25fps and with that, the video is also enhanced to show a bit more detail and look a little less dull.
