Matrox Box – 3 Screens

Using 2 or more monitors on your PC can increase productivity. Have you ever wanted to copy data from a spreadsheet in to a word document and you get fed up of minimizing one window to see the other. Having 2+ screens can help. I use 2 screens at home and run email on 1 screen and terminal services etc… and browse the internet on the other screen. This offers a great improvement to my productivity allowing me to work on a system while following notes on another screen.

Matrox have introduced a $300 TripleHead2Go device which increases the “real estate” in front of you. You set the resolution on your laptop or PC to higher and then plug your output in to the box and the box in to 3 19″ Flat Panel Displays (no doubt for $300 you only get the TripleHead2Go box). This gives you a combined resolution of 3840×768 which is far better for spreading your windows about on your computer. Also note that it all acts just like one big desktop and if you want a window over on the right you just drag it to the right like you would on a single screen setup.

Worlds Smallest wifi router – Asus WL-530g

Wifi.jpgThe Asus WL-530g is the smallest wifi router at the moment that I know of. I came across it today although it has been out for over a year. I still think it’s worth a mention though.

The cost of the device is £44.95 inc VAT in the UK and available from Expansys.

A similar upgraded router is available here.

The router is great for those travellers who like to have wifi as an option such as in a hotel room where the wireless connection may be slower and less reliable then the Ethernet port in the wall. Just plug it in and go!

Mobile Phone Cameras becoming more popular then Cameras?

A recent study shows that 44% of people use their mobile phone as their main camera. I can see with the introduction of even higher mega pixel cameras that they will one day totally take over.

The mobile phone is becoming a main point in most of our lives. They are used to time keep, as alarm clocks, more recently as MP3 players (especially with the launch of the Sony Walkman Phone).

This survey was performed by Nokia as the number of mobile phones across the world is aproaching 2.5 billion handsets. A crazy amount of phones in my opinion.

If mobile phone makers can add all the tools in to 1 device then I am all for this. On my phone I can watch TV, listen to MP3’s, send and receive emails, browse the internet at high speed and more. There is no doubt that mobiles are just going to continue pressing forwards heavily. Also I see wifi being integrated with the latest Nokia N range of phones as well as small hard drives in there also. A whole mine field of information will be available in your pocket from anywhere in the world.

I look forwards to what the future brings in the mobile phone industry!

Wall Socket PC… Great Idea

A British firm are to unveil a wall socket PC (pictured below). The wall socket PC is a thin client terminal which can be powered by ethernet and fits in to the wall. The device starts at £209.

Available from Jadeintegration.com.

Thin Client, courtesy of Wikipedia.
A thin client is a computer (client) in client-server architecture networks which has little or no application logic, so it has to depend primarily on the central server for processing activities. The word “thin” refers to the small boot image which such clients typically require – perhaps no more than required to connect to a network and start up a dedicated web browser or “Remote Desktop” connection such as X11, Citrix ICA or Microsoft RDP.
