Dragon USB Mirror Card Reader

The Dragon USB Mirror Card Reader is just another plain memory card reader. The only difference is that it’s a mirror also, I guess made for girls or something. It has 5 slots built in and can read… CF I, CF II, Microdrive, SM, SD, miniSD, MMC, RS MMC, MS, MS MagicGate, MS PRO, MS Pro MagicGate, MS Duo, MS Duo MagicGate, MS Pro Duo, MS Pro Duo MagicGate, MS Pro Ultra II, MS ROM, MS Select, and T-Flash type cards. Not a bad array of cards there! I just wish they would make 1 format of memory card and that would make life so much better 🙂

iPod Rumours

A number of rumours and drawings of touch screen iPods have been going around the internet for a while now. Apple announced recently that 2007 will be their biggest year for devices. The iPod touch screen is one such rumour which methodshop even posted some iPod patent pictures early on this year.

iPod Touch Screen
Along with this rumour is more news (rumour) which say the touch screen iPod will have a wide screen aspect ratio unlike it’s would be competitor from MS, the Zune. If iPod do go ahead with this and rumours are true then the Zune is doomed. Well, maybe anyway 😉

A quote from someone anonymous…
‘In a very matter of fact tone I was told that the product was not designed for the current generation of device, but the official 6G iPod¦ which is to be released in December. His company’s device only comes onto the market shortly before then and would benefit hugely because the new iPod would sport a screen that filled the full side of the device and consequently offer higher resolution video¦ This is why Jobs isn’t afraid of the Zune,’ he said, though he had no knowledge of whether wireless would make an appearance.

D-Link Xtreme N Gigabit Router (DIR-655)

D-Link announced their latest and greatest Xtreme N Gigabit router named the DIR-655. This new range of routers feature intelligent wireless QoS, Gigabit LAN and WAN ports, a wireless security wizard, network management software and other standard features also. The DIR-655 is 802.11n compliant and can deliver 14x faster speeds then the 802.11g which pushes it to ludicrous speed at the moment. Bear in mind that the 802.11n is draft at the moment. Also the range has been boosted 6 times which makes this one mighty powerful router.

Xtreme N Gigabit Router DIR-655

High Quality Features
Although the router is draft 802.11n compliant it is also backwards compatible with both 802.11g and 802.11b devices which means you do not need a whole new set of equipment to make use of this powerful device. With the speed of this router it makes wireless networking more desirable for transfering large amounts of files, music, video, printers and network storage. Of course the standards of encryption are included to help make your wireless network safer. The device has 3 external antennas and 4 ports running at 10/100/1000 speeds.

Intelligent QoS
When I first spotted intelligent QoS was included I wondered what it was capable of. A quick read over on D-Links site explained this clearly. Some routers route all wired and wireless traffic such as VoIP, video streaming, gaming and browsing as one stream of traffic all mixed together. Of course if you have VoIP this can sometimes cause an issue where it cannot have enough bandwidth provided for it to make the call clear.

Intelligent QoS sorts this out automatically and can sense what type of traffic is flowing. Anything that streams (VoIP, video streams etc..) is automatically given priority over items that do not stream (such as web browsing). This then prevents the choppyness that can be found on some other devices when overloaded.

Security
Wireless connections have always presented a security problem for homes and businesses. The problem is that a wireless connection is just like being able to tap directly in to a network cable, but with being in another building unspotted. Also there is the issue of packet sniffing and being able to crack WEP keys, or even worse… no encryption. The Xtreme range supports all the latest wireless security protocols which are WEP, WPA and WPA2 which encrypt your data to prevent attacks. The firewall built in also secures both SPI and NAT making the threat from the WAN port side be squashed.

Overall this looks like a nice step forwards in terms of performance on the speed side, network coverage (more appropriate for a large office) and security features.

New Sony Walkman NW-S700F Series

Sony realise that they are not at the top of the list for MP3 players. They know that the iPod has won over many people. Sony want to change this in a statement that Hiroshi Yoshioka said “Sony has a lot of strenghts that Apple doesn’t have”

Sony Walkman NW-S700F
The new Sony Walkman has been launched which should be out by the end of this year. The new line of audio players features things which no other device currently offers, and they hope that this will boost sales for them. Several models will go on sale up to 4Gb in capacity and this will sell for around $240.

Sony Walkman

Features
This new walkman from Sony features several snazzy functions such as copying direct from CD in to the MP3 player, a fancy noise reduction system which can boost levels according to the ambient noise around. The display is colour.

One thing that stands out most is the 3 minute charge which gives a nice 3 hours of playback. This is certainly a nice step forwards for those who love their music.

Noice Canceling Technology
Noise cancelling works on the NW-S700F in the way of discreet microphones built in to the 13.5EX headphones. These capture ambient noise, the walkman analyses it and adjusts volume, bass, treble levels to different levels to enhance the users experience in listening to the music. The actual functions invert the outside noise also which can then null the outside noise. The walkman boasts a 5 channel equaliser which can be used to adjust the music to different sounds such as club, arena and studio effects.

The screen is colour and is enhanced with a nice backlight which gives a floating effect of the text.

The models that will be available are the 1Gb NW-S703F which is available in gold and black, the 2Gb NW-S705F which comes in violet and black and then the mean 4Gb NW-S706F which comes in black.

Price is a little higher then the usual 4Gb flash player, but with the noise cancelling, quick charge and direct from CD to MP3 player technologies, it makes it well worth the $240 ish price tag.

Levitating Clock and Shuttle

Things that levitate are cool 🙂 The levitating clock is no exception to this. It floats with the help of a magnetic field and tells the time also. With the help of a rotating mechanism it will also slowly rotate in the magnetic field also which provides even more entertainment.

To get it working you plug it in, hold the clock in the “sweet spot” and let go. If you get it right it will stay there and float around.

HP iPAQ rx4000

HP have launched an iPAQ which is based around the Windows Mobile 5.0 OS but as the picture shows below, it seems that they are wanting to promote the music and video capabilities of this device. I have always liked the Windows PPC platform to work with and I find they are very functional.

What sets the iPAQ aside from from your average HP iPAQ is that this device has more built in media type applications. It has been designed with the consumer in mind. The screen can rotate the image so that it can be worked with in either portrait or landscape mode. We expect this device to hit the markets at around $299.
