iPhone Hacks – What do you want to see

iPhone

iPhone is coming today! What iPhone Hacks do you want to see?

After several months of waiting, the iPhone will be launching at 6pm tonight in the US. Wired put out the question today about iPhone hacks and what people want to see should they want more from their expensive iPhone. Suggestions such as Skype, MP3 ring tones, Instant Messaging, iPod and Internet without a phone plan and quite a few more have been mentioned. No doubt we will see an ongoing battle between the hackers and Apple like we do with the PSP and homebrew. Hopefully some decent apps can come out for the iPhone to make it in to an even more useful device. The collection of all programmers and Apple could make the good even better.

A company named Photo Violation Technologies have created a parking meter that calls you when you are about to run out of time. iPhone to get Glass Display Surface

iphone
The iPhone made by Apple, has received an upgrade already before launch. Apple have ditched the plastic display surface in favour of glass. This is great as it will mean less scratches although unfortunately that does not mean no scratches. It will add to the final weight of the phone, but I am all for a nice glass covered screen rather then having to stick a screen protector on the plastic one. As well as the nice glass screen, the iPhone is to get a better then expected battery which claims a life of 8 hours talk time, 6 hours internet use, 7 hours video playback and a hefty 24 hours of audio playback. That is quite a nice and very acceptable amount of hours for each of the uses.

Intel Chips Allow your Computer to Update while Switched Off

What would you think to having an Intel chipset that allowed your computer to still receive updates and maintenance while it is switched off? Its kind of cool in some ways but worrying in other ways if you ask me. This technology was introduced by Intel last year. According to them, it only allows authorised personnel to power up, repair and update switched off PCs with in a corporate network.

Intel are wanting to push this further in to main stream with consumers so that they do not need to worry about their PC being upgraded as it is all done behind the scenes for them. When the user switches on their PC a message pops up saying that their new updates have been installed.

Wooden Robots from Japan

Wood Robots
I came across a bunch of Wooden robots today over at Wired. There are no details at all about these. They do not appear to actually do anything over then just look like robots. They are quite cool though and definitely different to the usual metal type robots you see around the net.

How far does your WiFi go – 382 Kilometers

When I hear people talking about wi-fi and ranges of their routers you usually get to hear a few hundred feet at the most. This has been totally smashed and a record of 382KM was announced. Thats 238 miles (basically from where I am in Leeds and about 33 miles past London. The equipment used was customised with technology from Intel as well as some custom built parts. The parts used were all off the shelf. The guy who made this is also able to get about 3MBps from this connection which is quite amazing.

Problems faced are that wifi signals tend to break off when the range is increased. By focusing the signal you can increase the distance quite a bit. The next problem is obstacles. You need to have line of sight at this kind of distance… but unfortunately the curve of the earth gets in the way as well as the occasional tree, building etc… which is expected over 238 miles. Intel has created a way to steer electrically the signal which increases bandwidth also. I believe this test was performed up a mountain so it could have near line of site.

The Lightbulb that Floats

Bulb Magic
This picture of a light bulb is apparently real. It appears to be just floating there right in the middle of those two black blocks. Also, it is supposed to be working by electromagnetic forces which makes it wirelessly powered. It will be demonstrated in Barcelona later this week. Its something I want to see as surely it must be some kind of camera trick.

Safari to hit Windows XP and Vista

Apple Safari 3
From today a public beta version of Safari for Windows XP and Vista will be available for download. According to the keynote speech from Steve Jobs at WWDC 2007 earlier today the browser will be twice as fast as Internet Explorer 7 and 1.6 times faster then Firefox 2. This is something I welcome as speed of the browser is essential when on the net.

To run Safari 3 on Windows you will need XP or Vista and your system will need to have at least 256MB of ram with an Intel Pentium processor running at least 500MHz. Those specs are very low requirements to todays standards which is good news for you if you have a slower PC.

To download the Beta you need to get over to the Apple site. It is available now and was released just earlier today.

Amigo Wireless Router – Or Xbox 360

Amigo Wireless Router
The R622AG is built by Amigo and is a wireless router. It does look like an Xbox 360 though and the more I look at it the more it convinces me that they just used the same case and made space for new holes on the back. The wireless router is an 802.11 a/b/g and has 4 Ethernet ports and 2 USB ports which can be used to connect a variety of peripherals such as a hard drive or web cam.

Gizmo for Nokia S60 Phones – VoIP

Gizmo
Gizmo is a beta application available for download on the Nokia website. It allows you to use Instant Messaging and make internet calls. To get the software to work you just need to download it from the link at the end of this article, create an account with Gizmo (or use your current account if you have one) and then connect with your WLAN connection if your Series 60 phone will support it. If not then you can also use Gizmo over 2G or 3G networks, but I recommend you check pricing through your provider before you do that. Currently the software is fully compatible for the N80 and N95 Nokia S60 phones and works on other phones such as the N73 Music Edition, E61 and E65.
