Sony Camera Recall

DSC-U50
Eight models of Sony digital cameras are being recalled due to a defect in the LCD screens on some of the cameras. The problem is to do with an image sensor which has a glitch and causes pictures to not be displayed correctly. Currently there is no indication of how many cameras have this defect. Good news is that if your camera in the range listed below has this problem then you can send it in for repair and they will do this for free.

The recall is for the following cameras… DSC-F88, DSC-M1, DSC-T1, DSC-T11, DSC-T3, DSC-T33, DSC-U40 and DSC-U50.

Multi Vehicle SWARMS at MIT

Vehicle Tracking
The Quad Rotor multi vehicle flight test is running to see if 2 vehicles can fly together and track what is happening on the ground. The UAVs fly around controlled by a ground computer and can detect stationary and moving objects. Once detected they can be set to follow the moving object and if the object moves in to another zone then a different UAV can take over. This project is run by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and they are trying to build a fully automated system for ground surveillance and it seems they are making great headway. The link at the bottom of this article points you in the direction of some demonstrations and you will see that it’s working very well!

UK Ban on FM Transmitters Lifted in the UK

iTrip
If you have used an FM transmitter on your iPod in the past with in the UK then you have been breaking the law. They were illegal to use due to the signals interfering with broadcasts by legal radio stations. You could easily get your hands on one of these transmitters in an arrangement where you can buy legally but it’s illegal to use. I have one my self which I got a few years back and obviously is still in it’s packaging awaiting to be used on the 8th December 2006 when it will be legal to use. The new ruling put in to place by Ofcom who regulate the licences are permitting those that can use “spare frequencies” to be made legal. With this they are also removing the need to have a licence when using a Citizens’ Band radio.

The original law that made it illegal was drafted in 1949 and is called the Wireless Telegraphy Act of 1949 and forbids you to broadcast with out a licence. Ofcom saw that consumers wanted this in place and the laws were revised.

However, the new arrangement named “Wireless Telegraphy (Exemption) (Amendment) Regulations 2006” do not allow all of these FM transmitters to be legal. Many still do not meet certain technical specifications.

To check if the transmitter is legal you just need to look for the CE logo which means it is approved for use in the UK.

USB Hub Mouse Mat

USB Mouse Mat
The problem I find these days is that I have so many USB devices that I need to plug in daily that I dont want to climb behind the PC to my USB hub and plug them in each time I need to do something. The USB Hub and Mouse mat helps solve this problem by providing 4 USB ports on the back of the mat to plug your devices in to. This is perfect for those sets of devices that only need to be temporarily used while you can leave the rest behind your PC.

The mouse mat has Blue LED’s to indicate when a port it in use. It requires no external power as it mimicks self power mode. It supports v 2.0 of USB and can work at 12M or 1.5Mbps.

Linux Smartphone

FIC Linux Phone
A new Linux Smartphone is on it’s way called the FIC-GTA001. The phone is going to be released along with an SDK which will then allow users to create their own programs and functions for the phone.

The FIC-GTA001 has a 2.8 inch VGA screen, USB file sharing, multi touch sensor recognition, GSM, GPS, 128Mb RAM which a Samsung ARM9 processor. It will also play MP3’s.

Multi Touch
Multi touch technology gives the user the option of touching the screen with 2 fingers which will help with a bunch of tasks.

Giving the SDK along with the phone makes this an interesting step. I can see a lot of developers jumping on this concept to create their own software to power their new phone and then share it with the world.
