TV with no Remote Control – All Seeing Wave Controller

remote control

A TV that can change channels by waving your hand at it

If you are used to using a remote control and get devastated when it isnt with in arms reach of you, then this next invention could be for you. It is a box which allows you to control the TV by waving your hand at it. It can control your DVD player, TV and any other device around the TV. A total of 8 gadgets can be controlled by using seven simple hand gestures.

Although it adds to the laziness of the remote control, at least you can never loose the remote control any more because it is not needed. My only thought on this device is what happens when you eat or move, does it know when you are signalling the device or when you are just waving at someone.

The All Seeing Wave Controller was created by two engineers named Dr Prashan Premaratne and Quang Ngyuyen who are based in Australia. Both believe that the remote control wave controller will be on sale in 3 years time.

Various commands to control your gadgets can be found at the link below.

Pong with Lasers

wallofpong

Pong that works anywhere

This version of the game pong was created by a senior at Cornell University. It uses a laser that displays the pong ball on any surface. Using the controllers which are attached to an Atmega32 microcontroller you can hit the digital ball back and forth to each other. Each of the controllers for pong has sensors so it can detect where they are and let the processor know when to change the direction of the ball.

A chalk board works best to play this game on as you can draw the boundaries and let the computer know exactly where they are. The system is built in 3 parts. First there is the laser project platform, next is the two hand held paddles and then the microcontroller connecting them all together. The laser beam is projected on to a mirror which is controlled by 2 motors on an x and y axis.

The sensors in the paddle/controller are light sensors which pick up when the laser ball hits it so that the ball can be sent back to the opponent. 3 sensors are in each controller so that the full length of the paddle will actually send the ball back to the opponent.

Overall I am impressed with this and wish the students well with their project.

TomTom the SatNav Gurus file Cool Patent

TomTom PatentTomTom Patent Drawing

SatNav with real time video of the street ahead

TomTom have been in the SatNav industry for a while now. I owned one of their first navigation pieces of software a few years back for my Cassiopeia EM500 Pocket PC. I was amazed at the 3D maps and how they could rotate as you changed direction. However, thats all old school now as TomTom have filed a cool new patent which allows for actual video footage to be displayed on the screen of the SatNav and then the line of the route you take is superimposed on top of the live video. This is an excellent way to go as you actually will see what you are supposed to rather then a guess at what exit you should be taking when the regular maps are not quite clear.

Intel Chips Allow your Computer to Update while Switched Off

What would you think to having an Intel chipset that allowed your computer to still receive updates and maintenance while it is switched off? Its kind of cool in some ways but worrying in other ways if you ask me. This technology was introduced by Intel last year. According to them, it only allows authorised personnel to power up, repair and update switched off PCs with in a corporate network.

Intel are wanting to push this further in to main stream with consumers so that they do not need to worry about their PC being upgraded as it is all done behind the scenes for them. When the user switches on their PC a message pops up saying that their new updates have been installed.

Home Made Trekkie Cinema Room

Startrek Cinema RoomI have seen several pictures of people trying to create their home in to that Star Trek experience. A few months back, some guy in the UK tried to sell his Star Trek Voyager home on eBay for a few hundred K if I remember correctly.

This next Star Trek is a home cinema set up which uses original props from the set. The owner purchased two original bridge consoles at an auction. As can be seen he hasn’t held back at all in creating the full star trek experience. Crazy if you ask me though! [Read more…]
