iPhone iOS 4.0.2 Software Update

Apple [AAPL] this evening has pushed out a small iOS update numbered iOS 4.0.2. The update was made available to to secure the security hold that PDF files create…

Fixes security vulnerability associated with viewing malicious PDF files.

The iOS 4.0.2 update is available for the iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4, iPod touch 2nd Gen and iPod touch 3rd gen (late 2009 models).

Of course, if you want to use the iPhone 4 jailbreak then you need to stick with iOS 4.0.1 as the jailbreakme.com website uses the PDF vulnerability to inject the necessary code in to the iPhone. [Read more…]

iOS 4.1 Gets Email Based FaceTime Support

We have heard previously that FaceTime call requests could soon be made via email. We now see that iOS 4.1 Beta 3 has the email FaceTime call functions available. This indicates that the next generation iPod touch 4 could get a front facing camera.

The option is found in iOS 4.1 Beta 3 in the Contacts application where two options to connect the FaceTime call are given. The first is via the regular phone number and the second, as pictured above, is by email.

The reason an iPod touch 4 would require email to active the FaceTime call is that no physical number can be attached to the device leaving the option of email the next best thing. [Read more…]

MobileMe iDisk Streaming Hints that iTunes Cloud is Getting Closer

Last month, Apple [AAPL] updated the MobileMe iDisk app for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The new update sneakily brings in the ability to stream music from your iDisk to your iOS based device. Any music that you upload to iDisk can now be accessed and run in the background on devices that run iOS 4.

This appears to go against what record labels are demanding in that when music is streamed, you need to pay a license fee.

Apple recently pushed a new version of their iDisk software. iDisk is Apple’s online storage service similar to Microsoft Skydrive and Google Docs. Quietly mentioned in the release note of version 1.2 is the ability to play music files from remote storage in the background. I say “quietly” because this capability is not among the bullet list of features. Only if you click the “More” button do you see this listed:

* Play audio from your iDisk while using another app

Clear iSpot 4G Hotspot for iPad and iPhone

The Clear iSpot is a mobile 4G hotspot designed to allow smartphones and tablets to connect to the internet at 4G speeds.

The device is designed for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch and when those devices connect over a WiFi connection, they are then capable of accessing the internet at 4G speeds rather than the 3G speeds that currently can restrict them.

The iSpot is capable of allowing up to eight wireless devices to connect up to it and has been optimised for Apple [AAPL] products. We are not sure what that exactly means, but we assume any WiFi device with a fast enough connection will be able to get the same benefits from it. [Read more…]

Magic Trackpad Teardown

iFixit has down a teardown of the Magic Trackpad which launched just a few days ago.

The device is a multi-touch pad designed for the Mac and allows users to use another method to interact with their Windows or Mac based computers.

iFixit point out that this is one of the few Apple [AAPL] products where users can easily get to the batteries. The screw to get to the battery compartment has a square thread which make it more mechanical efficient. [Read more…]

Apple iOS 4.1 Beta 2 Released for Developers

Apple [AAPL] has released the next Beta version of iOS 4.1 numbered Beta 2. The new beta brings a few changes to the original Beta of 4.1 that was released recently.

The iOS 4.1 build is available only for developers at the moment and can be installed on all compatible iPhones and iPod touches which includes the iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4 as well as later generation touches.

Items changed in the new beta 2 includes a new baseband for the iPhone 4, 3GS and 3G which means you should hold off unlocking. Apple mentioned in the antenna conference the other week that they continually tweak the baseband to get better results, so we assume there will be some slight differences to antenna performance, but no where near a full fix as Steve Jobs confirmed it couldn’t be sorted with software. BGR along with others managed to get hold of a Samsung Protoype Windows Phone 7 device to test for a week. The hardware it’s self will never be launched although the preview is for the software that will be running on it, Windows Phone 7 from Microsoft [MSFT].

The preview covers hardware briefly although it doesn’t cover the specific Samsung handset used due to it never being launched. The requirements though were mentioned which includes a 1GHz CPU, 3.7 inch 4 point capacitive multi-touch display, 5 megapixel camera, 3 hardware buttons, dedicated graphics chip and memory built in with no removable storage allowed. Microsoft are being strict on the requirements to ensure that the Windows Phone 7 experience is good on any approved device that runs it. [Read more…]

Apple Touchscreen Spotted

Earlier today we wrote about a concept iPod shuffle that showed an iPhone 4 inspired glass front and back with a metal band around the edges. A small screen has been spotted that shows that the concept might be not that far off the mark.

The Apple [AAPL] touchscreen measures just 3cm by 3cm making it quite small. The information apparently comes from someone who deals with manufacturing Apple products and could indicate a small screen device is going to be launched soon.

‘Imagine, the author writes, ‘The black frame outside the screen plus a aluminum or add a Home button (or may not increase the Home key).

SNES for iPad Install Tutorial

If you own an iPad it is possible to play SNES games on the device. Lifehacker has created a four-step tutorial that shows you exactly how to get playing SNES games on your iPad along with the steps to pair up a Bluetooth Wii Remote to play the games with. If you don’t have a wiimote and prefer to use an iPhone or iPod touch as a controller then an alternative SNES emulator is available.

The first app looked at in the video is called SNES4iPhone which costs $5.99 and requires you jailbreak the iPad. Jailbreaking an iPad is quite simple thanks to apps like SpiritJB that allow a simple app to run on your Mac or Windows PC and push a button while the iPad is connected.

The full tutorial which can be found here, goes through each of the steps which show you how to jailbreak the iPad, install the SNES for iPhone software and sync up your Wii remote control. Once done, the video then shows you how to add games to your iPad so you can play them. [Read more…]
