iPhone 4 Jailbreak Code Goes Public

Comex, the developer of the iPhone 4 Jailbreak (JailbreakMe 2.0) has posted the source code of the said jailbreak.

The source code was released right after Apple [AAPL] launched the iOS 4.0.2 and iOS 3.2.2 updates that blocked and prevented the jailbreak from working.

The exploits that comex used to jailbreak the iOS could be used for other purposes, including delivering malicious payloads to grab control of iPhones, iPads , and iPod Touches. All that would be necessary is for hackers to dupe users into visiting a malicious Web site or persuading them to click on a link in an e-mail or text message.

Apple Event Coming Mid September

Apple [AAPL] will be holding an annual event mid-September according to AllThingsD.

This particular event has been held every year since 2005 and is expected to run next month. Items expected to be announced are the new iPod touch 4 with the Retina Display and the dual cameras for FaceTime. There is also the possibility that the iPod touch could get the A4 processor like the iPhone 4 currently has. With the higher resolution screen being mentioned, we suspect that the innards will also get spruced up a little. [Read more…]

iOS 4.1 Gets Email Based FaceTime Support

We have heard previously that FaceTime call requests could soon be made via email. We now see that iOS 4.1 Beta 3 has the email FaceTime call functions available. This indicates that the next generation iPod touch 4 could get a front facing camera.

The option is found in iOS 4.1 Beta 3 in the Contacts application where two options to connect the FaceTime call are given. The first is via the regular phone number and the second, as pictured above, is by email.

The reason an iPod touch 4 would require email to active the FaceTime call is that no physical number can be attached to the device leaving the option of email the next best thing. [Read more…]

MobileMe iDisk Streaming Hints that iTunes Cloud is Getting Closer

Last month, Apple [AAPL] updated the MobileMe iDisk app for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The new update sneakily brings in the ability to stream music from your iDisk to your iOS based device. Any music that you upload to iDisk can now be accessed and run in the background on devices that run iOS 4.

This appears to go against what record labels are demanding in that when music is streamed, you need to pay a license fee.

Apple recently pushed a new version of their iDisk software. iDisk is Apple’s online storage service similar to Microsoft Skydrive and Google Docs. Quietly mentioned in the release note of version 1.2 is the ability to play music files from remote storage in the background. I say “quietly” because this capability is not among the bullet list of features. Only if you click the “More” button do you see this listed:

* Play audio from your iDisk while using another app

Clear iSpot 4G Hotspot for iPad and iPhone

The Clear iSpot is a mobile 4G hotspot designed to allow smartphones and tablets to connect to the internet at 4G speeds.

The device is designed for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch and when those devices connect over a WiFi connection, they are then capable of accessing the internet at 4G speeds rather than the 3G speeds that currently can restrict them.

The iSpot is capable of allowing up to eight wireless devices to connect up to it and has been optimised for Apple [AAPL] products. We are not sure what that exactly means, but we assume any WiFi device with a fast enough connection will be able to get the same benefits from it. [Read more…]

The device is a multi-touch pad designed for the Mac and allows users to use another method to interact with their Windows or Mac based computers.

Apple iOS 4.1 Beta 2 Released for Developers

Apple [AAPL] has released the next Beta version of iOS 4.1 numbered Beta 2. The new beta brings a few changes to the original Beta of 4.1 that was released recently.

The iOS 4.1 build is available only for developers at the moment and can be installed on all compatible iPhones and iPod touches which includes the iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4 as well as later generation touches.

Items changed in the new beta 2 includes a new baseband for the iPhone 4, 3GS and 3G which means you should hold off unlocking. Apple mentioned in the antenna conference the other week that they continually tweak the baseband to get better results, so we assume there will be some slight differences to antenna performance, but no where near a full fix as Steve Jobs confirmed it couldn’t be sorted with software. The full tutorial which can be found here, goes through each of the steps which show you how to jailbreak the iPad, install the SNES for iPhone software and sync up your Wii remote control. Once done, the video then shows you how to add games to your iPad so you can play them. [Read more…]
