Android Vs iPhone Browser Speed Test Not Accurate

Yesterday, some results were published that showed the iPhone 4 was slower than the Google Nexus S in terms of page load speeds. The test data was gathered by looking up 45,000 web pages on each device. Today though, we hear that the tests were actually flawed due to the app used on the iPhone not utilizing new features of the Safari browser that was updated in iOS 4.3.

When testing with iOS 4.3, the company used UIWebView which unfortunately, didn’t benefit from the same speed increases as the Safari browser. What this means is that an accurate picture wasn’t gathered about the iPhone browser and thus, making it an unfair test. [Read more…]

Gmail for iPhone Updated with new Connection Bar

Google has updated Gmail for the iPhone. When loading up Gmail in the Safari browser, it now includes what is called a Connection Bar. The connection bar is an unobtrusive message bar that sits towards the bottom of the screen, resting on the controls. What it does is lets you know the status of your connection to the Gmail server and also provides details of emails that might not have been sent due to connectivity problems.

When information is needed, the connection bar pops up, but quickly gets out of the way when not needed to stay as far out of the way as possible, while being useful when needed. [Read more…]

iPhone Clock Breaks Again with DST Switch

Each time the clocks change in preparation for the summer, it seems that iOS devices have problems with making the change. Last time, alarms broke and this time it seems the clocks are switching an hour in the wrong direction.

This time each year, clocks move forwards an hour in the US (followed by the UK and other places shortly after). A quick search on Twitter reveals that this wasn’t the case though for a number of iPhone users who have essentially posted on twitter wondering why they woke up a couple of hours later than expected. Next Gen iPhone Will Not Include NFC Technology

Although we have seen patents going back as far as last year from Apple about integrating NFC in to an iPhone in the future, we learn today from The Independent, that Apple [AAPL] will not be including NFC technology in the iPhone 5 (perhaps 4S as it could be called).

With Google including NFC in the Nexus S and Orange confirming that NFC will be made available in a number of smartphones this year, it was expected that Apple would also introduce it and really make a push forwards with the technology. [Read more…]

iPhone 5 Could Get Larger Display – Or Smaller Device

Leaked engineering images, if real, show what could be the iPhone 5 with a larger display. Thanks to advances in technology on the iPad 2, it appears that some of the same technology can be used in the iPhone 5 display that makes the bezel needed thinner. The iPhone 4 already has a small bezel on the sides, but there’s still a few more mm of screen that could be squeezed in there.

What we see on the image above is that the screen seems to have kept the same aspect ratio and is basically just a few mm longer on the diagonal pushing it down, in proportion, to the home button. [Read more…]

Apple Patent Hints at Slimmer iPhone Future

Apple has filed an interesting patent that suggests they could be looking at using the regular 3.5mm and 2.5mm headphone/headset jacks, but also hints that the connection port could one day be thicker than the device its self.

The iPhone 4 measures 9.3mm in thickness and the new iPad 2 measures 8.8mm. Both of these form factors can easily fit a 3.5mm headphone jack. The problem will come in the future though as Apple find ways to slim down the next generation devices. At some point, they will get close to or slimmer than 3.5mm and when that happens, you’d think that they would just use a proprietary connection rather than standard. [Read more…]

64GB iPhone 4 Video Hands-On

Yesterday, a 64GB iPhone 4 was spotted. The device is believed to be an official prototype model, perhaps direct from the Foxconn factory in Shenzhen. On the back it is identified as having XXGB although a look in the settings reveals it is actually 64GB.

What is believed to be happening here is that Apple could be looking at introducing a larger capacity iPhone 4 in the near future while perhaps dropping off the 16GB model. It is unclear at the moment. What we could also be seeing is a fake although it does look convincingly real from the quality of the glass and components inside, down to how the iOS runs. PS3 Comes to iPad, iPhone and iPod touch with everyAir

pandaelf Labs has created a system that allows PS3 games to be played on any iOS device which includes iPad, iPhone and the iPod touch.

The system isn’t self contained in that you actually play the PS3 games that are stored on the device. Rather, you are connecting up to a PS3, PC and various other bits of hardware so that you use the iOS device as an interface.

The process is that the capture device streams live video from the PS3 to a computer. You then connect everyAir on iOS to the computer and with a few tweaks to the hardware, the interpreter knows what buttons you’ve pressed on the screen, sends them to the PS3 which then streams the appropriate video content back through the PC.
