iPhone 5 Clone Spotted in China
The image below is what could be the iPhone 5 when it launches. The device is a clone that was built in China, perhaps by people who have access to the designs of the new iPhone. It’s a little different to what we expected in that it’s a cross between an iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 in that it has the metal sides, but instead of being completely flat, the edges are more rounded.
iPhone 5 Now Rumoured to get October Launch
Prior to the launch of any popular gadget, rumours start going around about potential release dates. Last week, we heard a lot about September being the month, but now we are hearing that October will be the month that the iPhone 5 launches.
iPhone 5 Might Not Arrive in 64GB Capacity
One of the rumours about the iPhone 5 is that it will be supplied in a larger capacity of 64GB. Today, a screen shot hints that this might not be so. A screenshot (displayed below), shows some internal system from Korea Telecom which has three devices listed. Each begin AIP5 which means Apple iPhone 5 (similar to the AIP4 from last year). Two of those devices listed have capacities mentioned, one with 16GB and the other with 32GB. The final 00 model means it is an unlocked device and not a different model of the device.
iPhone 5 Release Date Now Rumored for 2nd Week in Sept
Earlier this week, a report indicated that the iPhone 5 release date was going to be around September 5th. We now hear slightly different rumours hinting at a week or so later than that.
Kindle for iPad and iPhone Updated – Kindle Store Button Removed
Amazon has updated the Kindle app for the iPhone and iPad today. The new update brings a few new features but also takes one away. The feature removed is the Kindle store button that takes users directly from the app to the store to buy books. This has been met by a bit of frustration by regular Kindle app users:
by GLutenFreeMel
You can no longer go to buy books or get samples directly from the app. Apple made them remove the store feature, but I can’t see myself using my kindle app on my phone or IPad anymore.
Another said the app has now just become unappealing.
iPhone 5 Release Date Rumoured to be September 5 (US)
Apple broke the yearly release cycle tradition by not announcing the iPhone 5 in June this year. Instead, they delayed it a little till sometime in September. We now understand that the iPhone 5 release date could be on September 5 of this year (2011). This information doesn’t come from Apple direct (who have confirmed a product launch in September), but actually comes from Swisscom who said the phone would be launching on October 5 which is 1 month after the US launch (giving us a rough estimate of September 5 although it will likely fall sometime in that week, perhaps a Friday).
Apple Begin Selling Unlocked iPhone 4 in the US
In the US, Apple has begun selling an unlocked GSM version of the iPhone 4. The cost is $649 and for that you get the unlocked iPhone 4 compatible with GSM networks. It comes with no microSIM card.
iOS 5 Hints at Two iPad 3 and Two iPhone 5 Models
Although there’s not much we are too surprised about here, we still thought we’d mention that iOS 5 has indications that two iPad 3 models will be launching as well as 2 iPhone 5 models. The information comes from the SDK that shows references to iPad3,1 and iPad3,2 as well as iPhone4,1 and iPhone4,2. No mention of a new iPod touch is listed.
The reason the iPhone model numbers contain a four is that it’s the forth generation iPhone if you count the 3G still as first generation.
iWork Apps Now Available for iPhone and iPod touch
The iWork suite of apps have always been available for iPad owners, but never for iPhone or iPod touch users. This has now changed as Apple has finally released versions of the apps that are compatible with both the iPhone and iPod touch.
The new versions went live in the App Store yesterday when the familiar + sign was added to the app which means the single apps are compatible with both the large and smaller screened devices.
iPhone 4 Noise Cancellation is Powered by Audience
iFixit has revealed that the iPhone 4 has noise cancellation technology that is powered by Audience. Audience is the same chip that is used in the Google Nexus One in that two microphones are used with one capturing the voice and the other capturing background noise. The chip then can cut out background noise to make better quality calls.
The iPhone 4 uses this same technology. When iFixit first took the iPhone 4 apart, they did find two microphones but it wasn’t clear what technology was being used for noise cancellation. After another look inside the iPhone 4 when the Verizon model launched, the same mysterious unknown chip was found inside. Rather than ignore it, Chipworks (friends of iFixit), decided to take a look inside the chip and they found the following:
iPhone 5 to Lack NFC
Near Field Communications (NFC) was first rumored to be arriving in the iPhone 4 last year. This of course didn’t happen. Due to a few Apple patents, these rumors were then reignited for the soon to be released iPhone 5. We now hear that this also wont be happening.
