Apple iSlate Tablet – More Rumours

Although nothing official has been announced about the Apple Tablet (to probably be called the iSlate), there are still a number of rumours floating around which still suggest it will be announced this month. The latest information says that the engineers and companies working on the project have all dropped off the map in the same way the same companies did back in early 2007 when the first iPhone was being prepared for launch.

The drop off the map is described by Josh Gruber as a “cone of silence” and sees Apple going in to meetings with potential partners with no prototype or presentation where potential partners are asked if they were interested “if they were to create a new platform”. [Read more…]

Google Phone – Nexus One Hands-On

Gizmodo managed to get to spend some time with the Google Phone AKA Nexus One. The N1 is built by HTC and is described by Gizmodo as being a Motorola DROID killer in all ways. The phone has no physical keyboard making it very thin. It’s fast and managed to beat both the DROID and iPhone in web page load speeds consistently.

The screen on the Nexus One (N1) measures the same as the DROID but has been described as looking amazing. The blacks are blacker and the colours are more vibrant making the whole visual experience far better.

The Nexus One currently runs Android 2.1 and overall it runs faster than the DROID. There are no official numbers on the CPU at the moment but Giz believe it to be a 1GHz processor inside providing a more snappy user experience. [Read more…]

Maine Considering Cancer Warning Labels for Mobile Phones

A Maine legislator is trying to make it a requirement that mobile phones used in that area carry warnings that using a phone can lead to brain cancer.

It’s still unclear if mobile phone usage can cause brain cancer though and as of yet there is no general consensus on there being cause for worry or not.

Although it’s a bit of a strange requirement, I guess there is no harm in putting a warning message on the back of a phone to warn people that there might be dangers. [Read more…]

Samsung Omnia 2 to get Swype Text Entry System

swypeIn September last year we first mentioned Swype, a system that was created by the inventor of T9 predictive text input. The Swype system allows you to glide your finger around a virtual keyboard moving quickly from letter to letter while it calculates what word you are wanting to input.

After about 14 months of waiting we hear today that the Samsung Omnia 2 on the Verizon network will be the first phone to use the Swype input system.

The Swype input system appears to work very well on the comparison. The video below shows text on an iPhone compare to Swype on another phone with the user inputting text with Swype being the clear winner in terms of speed. Of course it’s not a result for every iPhone user vs Swype user as it will all depend on the person entering the text, but at least it offers another option for text entry on a virtual keyboard hopefully that some people will like.
