Google Android 2.2 to get Flash

In a recent interview, Google [GOOG] VP of Engineering Andy Rubin mentioned that the next version of Google Android, codenamed Froyo, would get Flash support… “…He also promised that full support for Adobe’s Flash standard was coming in the next version of Android, code-named Froyo”

It is expected that Android Froyo (2.2) will be launched sometime in May due to statistics packages already starting to pick up traffic from the platform under the 2.2 version.

Also in the interview Rubin spoke about Android eventually outselling the Apple iPhone due to the iPhone being stuck to 1 manufacturer (ie, Apple [AAPL]) where as Google take the open approach and have a number of different mobile phones running the OS. [Read more…]

Nokia N8 Reviewed

Mobile-Review managed to get their hands on a Nokia N8 recently for review to see if it’s as good as expected, or if it will be a flop for the mobile phone company.

Apple iPad doing well in web browser share

Wired have reported that 26 percent of their mobile traffic comes from Apple iPad users. The numbers used on the chart were recorded from April 3 to April 19 and are broken down to iPhone/iPad, iPad and others.

Wired also comment that the sharp incline of iPad users also is followed by the same decline in iPhone and iPod touch users indicating that many users who own an iPhone/iPod now also own an iPad and have ditched the mobile for browsing on the iPad.

Looking at the Gadget Venue numbers, we don’t quite see the same 26% of mobile users on iPad but we do see 18% which is still impressive for such a new device. [Read more…]

Apple iTravel App Uncovered

Patently Apple have found a patent by Apple [AAPL] that runs through a new application called iTravel. iTravel is said to be a system that focuses on matters such as Airport check-in and baggage identification as well as dealing with car rentals, hotels, travel booking and anything else travel related.

The system relies on near field communication (NFC) that seems to be in a few patents recently including the new Apple concert ticket patent.

It appears that NFC could be used in the iPhone 4G / HD that is expected to launch in a few months although it could also indicate that the iPhone that will launch 2011 might have NFC with all these patents getting ready to fully utilise the capabilities of the technology when it arrives in the hardware. Apple iPad to get OLED Screens in 2nd Gen – Rumour

Digitimes have found some leaked information regarding the second generation Apple iPad that is expected to launch next year.

This time they are saying that next years iPad launch will see the device getting an OLED screen. The rumour also claims that Apple [AAPL] are already working on the design of the next generation iPad. We hear that the screen to be used in the device will be the same as that “rumoured” to be used in the next generation iPhone, aka iPhone 4G or iPhone HD.

The problem right now with OLED is the high costs of manufacturing the units. When comparing the costs of an LCD panel to that of an OLED panel the price jumps up (for a 9.7 inch display) from 60 – 70 USD all the way up to $500 making them quite expensive for now. [Read more…]

Apple iPad – The Worlds Most Expensive Name Tag

This is probably one of the more (if not most) expensive ways to let everybody know what your name is.

The Apple iPad application is called My Name Is and is simply used for you to enter your name and then wear it around your neck to let everyone know who you are.

When I say iPad app, I should probably clarify that it’s actually an iPhone application zoomed in… either way I guess it takes a special sort to want to use the app. [Read more…]

Apple Patent shows “Concert Ticket +” Application

Apple [AAPL] have filed a detailed patent that shows they want to get in to the Concert event tickets business. From what we see they are creating a new application to be called “Concert Ticket +” that works in conjunction with Apple iTunes and eliminates the need for paper tickets.

The system is designed to enhance the concert ticket buying process and from what we can gather, will provide access to live recordings of concerts you have attended, allow access to theme parks and other large events as well as let you know when concerts are happening nearby.

The system shows that users can store tickets on the iPhone for use at a concert. By possibly using NFC, ie near field communications with RFID tags, it would allow the iPhone, or other device to be used to authorise entry. [Read more…]

Apple iPad No Flash Support Illustrated with Superheroes

It certainly isn’t new news that the iPad and any of the iPhone OS devices lack flash from Adobe, but this drawing attempts to illustrate it a different way than the normal complaints we hear and see.

The image represents a bunch of superheroes with one of the characters being called the Flash. As you can see in the larger image below… he is gone. [Read more…]

Nokia X6 Review

The Nokia X6 is a music phone that aims to join the touchscreen device area of phones that Apple, HTC and only a few others have managed to make happen well.

The phone it’s self looks to be a slider phone from when you first take it out of the box, but it’s actually not and just a touchscreen device with no stylus or physical keyboard. Reasons for believing it’s a slider is due to it being quite thick (13.8mm) which is a fair bit for a phone without a keyboard. Looks wise it looks quite sleek still even though a little fatter than most phones.

On the front of the device is a touchscreen that measures 3.2 inches. It is capacitive and has a resolution of 640 x 360 pixels which Nokia call nHD although of course, it’s no where near a HD screen in terms of pixels on the screen although it does look very clear when using the screen. Above that is a front facing camera that allows you to make video calls. Below the screen are three buttons which are send call, end call and menu. [Read more…]

Official Twitter App Heading to Google Android

Evan Williams of Twitter announced at the Chirp conference that the microblogging network will be launching an Android app.

Right now it isn’t clear who will create the app, as in will it be built in house or will they acquire a company and work on their app, or if they will even higher 3rd party developers. Either way, the official Twitter Android app will be coming sometime soon.

Saturday just gone, Twitter acquired a company called Tweetie who created a very good twitter application on the iPhone. Now that this has been purchased the application is being called Twitter for iPhone and will not be charged for like it currently is. We are unsure of the time line but we suspect the minor changes to price and a name are just going through app store approval which should be complete by the end of the month. [Read more…]

Apple iPad Flash Video made Possible with RipCode

The story of the Apple iPad and iPhone OS not allowing flash has been going on for a while, even to the point now where Adobe are looking at taking legal action over it.

A company called RipCode looks to be the one who could bring flash to the iPad by introducing their new codek called TransAct Transcoder V6 that is designed to intercept video in the Adobe Flash based format and convert them on the fly in to a container on the iPad. This process is completely transparent to users of the iPad and will allow users to view flash content on the iPad.

The iPad is poised to further accelerate and expand the mobile video device market just as the iPhone has over the last several years. However, one of its noted shortcomings has been Apple’s lack of support for Flash video playback, given the dominant position of Flash in professionally generated entertainment, sports and news content. HTML5 has been purported to address this dilemma by introducing Apple device applications that are simply ˜thin clients’ communicating back to a web site hosting and subsequently delivering Flash files without a device-based player, but HTML5 is not yet widely adopted. RipCode’s Transactional Transcoding platform enables an alternate and immediate solution to this issue, opening up video content to users without requiring the content hoster to move to HTML5 or pre-transcode entire video libraries from Flash to an iPad-accepted container format. By transcoding the content ˜in the cloud’, it is essentially analogous to a network-based Flash to MP4 or MPEG-TS video adaption layer.
