AT&T to Roll out HSPA+ to 250M in US

We found out today that the AT&T [T] network is receiving an upgrade this year that will bring HSPA+ to 250 million users. The news comes from the AT&T president and CEO John Stankey who announced it earlier today in New York.

What this means is that those with compatible HSPA+ devices (which isn’t many, if any mind you), will get around double the transfer rate of HSPA at 7.2MBps potentially bumping it up to 14.4MBps.

This isn’t as quick as 4G LTE network although it is a nice step in the right direction for the company. [Read more…]

Acer Launching Chrome OS Devices in Two Weeks

VentureBeat are reporting that Acer are set to launch new Chrome OS based devices in as little as two weeks. The new devices (we assume netbooks and maybe smartbooks) will be launched at Computex that is being held in Taipei from June 1 to June 5.

Google [GOOG] designed Chrome OS to function on netbooks, tablets and smartbook devices, so it could be either one of those with the emphasis probably being on the netbook and smartbooks.

No other information is known about Acer and their plans for Chrome OS, but as June is only a few weeks away, it wont be long before we find out for sure where they are heading with Chrome OS. [Read more…]

Amazon iPad App Launched

Amazon has launched a new app for the Apple iPad that aims to make shopping with the company a lot easier. An app already existed for the iPhone, but thanks to the larger screen of the Apple iPad the app has now been optimised to add more features to the screen and give an overall better experience while spending your cash.

When loading up the app, you are able to log in and access your Amazon account along with details of your existing shopping cart, wish lists and payment/shipping options. 1-click settings can also be found in the application. [Read more…]

Adobe Attack Apple with New Ads

Adobe and Apple [AAPL] have been in the news a fair bit recently with this Flash business. They still seem to be feeling the pains as they just started up a new campaign over on Engadget where two ads are showing. The first says “We [heart] Apple” and the second ad says “What we don’t love is anybody taking away your freedom to choose what you create, how you create it, and what you experience on the web”.

As well as pushing the ads on to Engadget, a letter has also been written by Adobe saying what they feel about the situation…

We believe that consumers should be able to freely access their favorite content and applications, regardless of what computer they have, what browser they like, or what device suits their needs. No company – no matter how big or how creative – should dictate what you can create, how you create it, or what you can experience on the web.

When markets are open, anyone with a great idea has a chance to drive innovation and find new customers. Adobe’s business philosophy is based on a premise that, in an open market, the best products will win in the end – and the best way to compete is to create the best technology and innovate faster than your competitors.

We believe that Apple, by taking the opposite approach, has taken a step that could undermine this next chapter of the web – the chapter in which mobile devices outnumber computers, any individual can be a publisher, and content is accessed anywhere and at any time.

In the end, we believe the question is really this: Who controls the World Wide Web? And we believe the answer is: nobody – and everybody, but certainly not a single company.

Comcast Xfinity Remote Apple iPad App Demoed

Comcast has created a new Apple iPad app that allows your iPad to interface with your cable box. The application gives a complete run-down of what’s on TV now and what is coming up soon. The software interfaces with the TV box allowing you to use the iPad as a giant remote control and channel guide.

Also the Xfinity Remote app allows you to search on-demand content where an in-depth review of each program is displayed on screen. Once you find the title you want to watch, just tap on the iPad screen to launch it on your TV. [Read more…]

Skype Wont make it to Windows Phone 7

We are hearing today that Skype will not be creating a version of it’s VoIP software for Windows Phone 7 devices that will launch later this year. Instead, the company will focus their efforts on iPhone OS, Android OS and Symbian based devices.

Right now the reasons are unknown for this decision, but perhaps it’s due to restrictions that Microsoft [MSFT] have put in place for developers where Skype might feel they cannot do enough. Alternatively they might have just lost a bit of faith in the platform.

Although they have said no to creating a WP7 VoIP app at an event in Sydney Australia, this could change closer to the time and we’ll never know for sure until Skype make an official announcement – or, when Skype never appears for WP7 devices. [Read more…]

FCC Make Plans to Tackle Bill Shock

Occasionally, mobile phone users get hit with a surprise bill. In some cases the bills are huge spreading in to the hundreds of pages to print them out. Of course it’s the user who really needs to keep tabs on usage and especially when roaming, but the FCC plan to step in to help tackle “Bill Shock”.

The FCC are putting plans in place that will require cell phone providers to let users know when charges are being exceeded and when users bills look like they are going to be very large.

Although it isn’t clear if and when all this will happen, perhaps later this year or next year we might get some friendly reminders when roaming and using excessive amounts of data and voice calls. [Read more…]

Apple iPad to get Wi-Fi Fix

A number of Apple iPad users have noted that the Wi-Fi connectivity has been quite bad with connections often dropping. Reasons for this have been determined by some to be the DHCP lease expiring where the iPad needs to grab a new IP address and in so doing, has problems for some reason.

Temporary fixes have included disabling and re-enabling wifi on the iPad and in some cases, power-cycling the iPad (ie, switching it right off and back on). Of course, these work-arounds are not the ideal thing to have to do for something that should just work.

We are hearing good news though in that Apple [AAPL] are intending to fix the issue with a software fix sometime soon. It isn’t clear when a firmware fix will be release and how it will all work, but we assume it will be a 3.2.1 release or similar and hopefully they don’t make us wait till the iPad iPhone OS 4.0 release later on this year. Apple MobileMe Could be Going Free

We are hearing rumours today indicating that Apple [AAPL] could be making the MobileMe service free for all users.

Normally the service costs $99/year on a subscription basis and provides a number of features such as cloud based email, storage, photo galleries as well as the ability to sync contacts, calendars and bookmarks across a range of computers and phones. Another feature is Find My iPhone that allows users to track down their iPhone if lost, or remotely kill it if stolen.

The downside right now is obviously the cost with what seems to be a number of people just ignoring the service.

The rumours are saying that MobileMe will soon become free of charge to all users and that Apple are just waiting for their new server farm to become active in North Caroline which I assume is to handle the influx of iPhone and iPad users wanting to utilise the service. [Read more…]

Apple and AT&T in a Five Year Exclusivity Deal till 2012

Ever since the launch of the Apple iPhone back in 2007 a number of people have speculated on what the length of contract was for AT&T to retain exclusivity of the iPhone in the US. We have heard several times in the past that “exclusivity is ending this month” and it never does.

Engadget did some digging around and have found confirmation that a five year deal was signed between Apple [AAPL] and AT&T [T] starting in 2007 when the iPhone came out and ending in 2012.

The reasons this information is now confirmed is due to some court documents that were filed by Apple in California.

Here’s the deal: an ongoing California class-action lawsuit filed in 2007 claims that Apple and AT&T illegally exerted a monopoly over iPhone service by telling customers the iPhone’s required service contract was two years long when the Apple / AT&T exclusivity deal was actually for five years — thus requiring buyers to re-up with AT&T for three years (and not, say, T-Mobile) if they wanted to keep using the iPhone. Obviously Apple had to respond to these allegations, and in addition to arguing that no one was ever promised an unlocked iPhone after two years, the company’s lawyers repeatedly confirm the existence of the five-year agreement while noting it was publicly reported in USA Today.

Apple Working on Replacement for Adobe Flash

It will come as no surprise that Apple [AAPL] dislike Adobe Flash and that they will more than likely never allow it on the iPhone OS. Steve Jobs went as far as publishing a long letter as to why Apple will not work with Adobe Flash.

We are now hearing that Apple are working on their own Flash replacement. This isn’t the HTML5 used for video, but an actual flash replacement called Gianduia that Apple has been working on for a while and long before these iPad and no flash support arguments started.

Although it is unclear what exactly Gianduia will do, it is possible that this is one of the reasons why Apple do not allow flash on the iPad and iPhone devices… ie, they are already working on their own replacement. [Read more…]

Apple iPad to get Printing Support

Although the iPad has proved successful for Apple [AAPL], there are still a number of complaints which range from there being no camera to no flash support and on to no printing support. The latter of these has now been addressed by Steve Jobs himself.

One guy decided to email Steve Jobs and ask him direct why the Apple iPad had no printing support to which Steve Jobs answered in his classic one liners, “It will come”.

Although this tells us nothing about release dates and how it will happen, at least it appears that something is in the pipeline for printing support on the Apple iPad. [Read more…]
