Motorola Droid X spotted on Verizon Site

The Motorola Droid X Android smartphone arrived on the Verizon [VZ] site earlier today with a number of specs revealed.

The Droid X will have a 4.3 inch screen and the screen will be 720p which from what we understand, makes it the highest res screen on the market. iPhone 4’s Retina Display will closely follow although it’s important to note that the iPhone 4 screen is smaller, so the pixels per inch could match or be very close to each other. Update: The device has a 854 x 480 display and can capture in 720p. Verizon has updated the ad.

A HDMI output port is also provided. Geeky Gadgets points out that Verizon could mean there is a 720p output rather than a 720p screen although the banner below makes it quite clear that the screen is 720p. We’ll wait for the specs to get final details of that. See update above. [Read more…]

Google Android Gingerbread to get a more Friendly UI

Google [GOOG] is working on it’s next version of Android which has been codenamed Gingerbread. We are not sure what version number it will have, ie Android 2.3 or Android 3.0, but what we do hear is that Google will be stopping manufacturers from layering their own UI’s over the top. Layered UI’s include HTC Sense UI, MotoBlur and other similar custom UI’s that get created.

Instead, Google’s main focus for Android Gingerbread is to get a UI to the same level as iOS 4. It isn’t clear if Google will actually put a stop to custom UI’s or if they hope to achieve a good enough UI that manufacturers don’t see the need to do their own. [Read more…]

Mac Mini Teardown

On Monday Apple [AAPL] launched the iPhone 4 as we all know about. The same day the new Mac Mini was introduced which now comes with a unibody and a HDMI port.

iFixit has managed to get hold of one, despite all the systems going down for a while on Monday, and have torn it down to see exactly what’s going on inside it.

Some things to note is that the new Mac Mini (mid 2010 model) is slimmer in height but slightly wider than the previous model. The power supply is now internal which gets rid of the brick used on previous models to keep it powered.

The casing is unibody as mentioned above and is machined from a single block of aluminium. To get inside the Mac Mini was simple in that no tools were needed to crack it open. A simple twist opened it up. [Read more…]

Horizon MiniPak Pocket-Sized Fuel Cell Charger

The Horizon MiniPak is a portable fuel-cell charger that can be used to power mobile phones and other similar devices while on the move.

With the device using fuel-cell technology the device can generate power as soon as the fuel cartridge is topped up or replaced. There is no need to wait around to use the charger as power is instant the moment fuel is inserted in the cartridge. [Read more…]

IBM Seer Augmented Reality Wimbledon Tennis App

IBM has created a new app for the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and Android smartphones that brings augmented reality to the Wimbledon Tennis tournament.

The application is designed to let you navigate around the grounds and more easily find games you want to watch. By pointing the smartphone in the direction of a game you can pick up scores and details of the match and if cameras are available, you can even watch the match on the screen of your smartphone.

The app is called IBM Seer. It also shows other useful information such as where to get food, where toilets are and other general information that you might need throughout your stay. [Read more…]

Google Earth for iPad Launched

Finally, Google Earth is now available for download on the iPad. The new app works very similar to how the iPhone version works but with the iPad having a larger screen it makes the experience far better… well, at least the idea is better as we actually found it to be a little buggy and slow.

The main problem we cam across was when using pinch to zoom where the “Earth” couldn’t keep up and kept freezing. Hopefully it’s just a software bug that can be fixed and hopefully a patch will be released soon for that.

But either way, it still looks very impressive running on the larger screen. [Read more…]

Apple Has Begun Accepting iOS 4 Apps

Apple [AAPL] is starting to accept applications designed and updated for the new iOS 4 that launches June 21.

At the moment there are no third-party apps on the iPhone that can multitask. This is because iOS 4 needs some code to be executed in the app to enable multitasking.

If developers decide not to upgrade their applications then those apps that are not updated wont be capable of being multitasked and instead, will just close out and re-open from scratch rather than opening from where they left off. Of course, not all apps will need to be multitask enabled due to what they do, but on the other hand, there will be many that we expect to see with the feature enabled. [Read more…]

Adobe Flash Could be on 250 Million Devices by end of 2012

Adobe [ADBE] has reported that it expects to see Flash installed on over 250 million devices by the end of 2012. A scaled-down version of flash has been created that allows the software to function on less powerful phones.

Apple’s Chief Executive Steve Jobs has sharply criticized Flash, calling it unreliable and ill-suited for mobile devices such as the iPhone and iPad, raising questions about its security and power-management.

Although Apple [AAPL] has resisted using Flash and instead has promoted the use of the HTML5 standard, companies such as Google [GOOG] are embracing the technology and we will soon see it in Android 2.2 when it launches. [Read more…]

iOS 4 iBooks Now Available

Apple [AAPL] has launched iBooks for iOS 4. Although the new OS isn’t publicly available, developers are still able to download the latest release.

So, if you happen to be running iOS 4 on your iPhone then do a search on iTunes and download it now. The iBooks app for iPhone doesn’t appear to be available OTA at the moment, but we suspect it will arrive soon. Once installed you’ll get the usual Winnie the Pooh sitting on the shelves and will also be able to download any purchased eBooks that you have on your iPad.

The application it’s self might not run on the older iPhone 3G from what Engadget reports of it’s experience in testing, but this will hopefully be just early days rather than a limitation on the older device. [Read more…]

Motorola Android Smartphone with 2GHz CPU Could Launch This Year

Motorola has announced that they are working on building a Google Android based smartphone that will come with a 2GHz CPU. That’s double what we normally see on Android devices with the usual CPU being the 1GHz Snapdragon.

The information came from the CEO of Motorola (Sanjay Jha) who mentioned the details at a speech in Chicago.

What also comes as a surprise is that Motorola will be launching the handset by the end of this year which will potentially make it the most powerful smartphone on the market. [Read more…]
